There was no new tax of 7.5% announced. What you are mistaking it for is a pre budget submission from the ESRI that refers to a hypothetical merging of PRSI and the employment and health levies which was mentioned in last years budget. This may or may not happen and if it does, there is no mention of a rate that will be levied on people.
GalwayGuy35: just heard there on the radio about a new 7.5% tax for everyone regardless of income that is being considered by the government. as bad as the income levy is at least its according to ones income how much you pay. how do they expect lower paid workers like me to only pay the same as someone on a high salary.

well it supposidly is means tested but obviously not enough..aww i wont be a begrugder..
blipper2000: means test third level fees education is everything
if you sit on the rim your kid could miss university because you cannot afford it and I disagree with that, everyone should be given chance to go, the thing with means testing it's those who just miss out who suffer hence the kids miss out.
My son's a student by the time he leaves uni he will be up to his neck in debt. The reality is working class families miss out, because the parents can't help send them away from home, should not be that way, cost a bloody fortune even if they get loans and grants. oh and cause it you blip
Public sector workers don`t work hard enough to justify their wages[ grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr yes frontline staff do its the penpushers dont

For anybody living with their parents, their dole should be cut. Childrens allowance taken off every family earning 60k + A tax on text messages (3-5 cent per message would rake in millions). Any other social welfare should not be touched. The elderly should certainly not be touched. Even though they wont, corporate tax should be increased from 12.5% to 15%.

In light of the curtain situation many are struggling however my parents had enough sense to allocate monies towards our education and our future, thus this gave us the opprunity to Educate ourself through thankfully the support of our parents, we also supported ourselves by working part time. There were seven of us and the last is now studying in college! Working class doesn't make people ill quiped or unable to accept the burden of sending there children for future training. They saved for this, this may sound terribly ignorant of me but if you choose to have children you are also committed to giving them an opprunity to Education and yes there are huge cost involded. In light of students fees with are likely to come in will make things difficult however they are at a realistic stage now and affordable if the foresight is there to save, the difficulties attached is funding the added cost attached to them studying.
I for one if I choose to have children would hate the thought that I couldn't give them an opprunity to further there education i.e putting aside savings for there future pursuits

you won't be paying the same - you will be paying the same percentage - 7.5% of €100 is €7.50 - 7.5% of €200 is €15 the more they earn the more they pay!
if we don't like what they want us to do and don't give us a good enough reason for it - they are few, we are many, we could protest.

Yes you could cut there dole, however what of those young people that have debt attached? The only way this would work if there parents are finically able to cover the added cost of another in the house this not be the case for some as its unlikey you could contribute much if nothing into a house. Also it must be considered that not everyone under a certain age bracket have the option to go home, you could be putting indivduals under huge pressure if this is the case!
60k is not a huge income in todays society so I would pushing that figure up!

why have dole at all? why not ask people on the dole for more than 2yrs to work in some way for their community? it would save money used for the dole, get jobs done and create employment for the people administrating and supervising it. just a thought!

Yes, very valid point! And the 60k figure, i guess there are a high number of families on 100k+ , that would take in substantial money. Its hard to see what they actually will do, whatever it is its going to hurt everybody hard except for the big boys of course.

That sounds more like a cost than a way of saving money. Yes you would get local jobs done but that wont make the government a cent in my opinion! Then you have to take into consideration all the people that cannot work due to illness and disability, that would be taken advantage of if such a thing was implemented i feel. But i do see the good emphasis behind that idea, for sure.

Yes that would be great, it'd motivate people and give them a sense of selfworth. I know someone that popped along there a community meeting and wanted to help out free of charge hopefully they'll get back to him, anything just to get him out of the house and the constant knock backs from companies was getting him down!

Thats nearly on the same lines as a fas ce scheme or back to work...but theres flaws in that to.Most of the schemes are not training people up to the proper standard and so when they do finish and try to go and get jobs they are just getting rejected and back on the dole. And working in the community your saying create jobs when at the moment they are cutting jobs.JMO

No give them a job to do and set it to there skill set to do so while paying them to dole in there local community landscaping whatever, surely it could be implemented as a cost saving measure. Anyone with disablity will be taken into account as I believe its called disablity allowance not dole as there are a number of people unable to do something due to illness.
