Tax, tax and more bloody tax. Have the politicians not learnt their lesson from the 1980's that spending cuts are nearly exclusively the best way to get out of recession not tax increases, no country has ever sucessfully taxed its way out of a recssion.

Time to bring in the EU/IMF our political establishment government and opposition don't have a clue how to run a country.

Who would you like to see in government sharmini? I actually think Labour would be worse, Gilmore was coming out yesterday ruling out welfare cuts which have to happen in the budget if Ireland is to stave off the EU/IMF.

I reckon they'll be an election in the Spring after the government lose the three by elections, I will vote for the party who is the most brutally honest about the spending cuts that are ncessary to prevent Ireland completely losing its economic independence. At the moment its either FF or FG.

I liked Varadkars suggestion taht over €6 billion needs to be cut in Decembers budget, its more like €9 or €10 billion in my opinion.

re the new tax...an expert commentator made the point that income tax allowences would need to be altered, in favour of the lower paid..in order to make this tax equitable...

People say theres damn all diff between ff anfd fg....I find ff more humane..closer to centre......fg can be to righest for my liking..and labour too idealistic....

It kinda reminds me of being involved in a divorce settlement...y'kno, the legal eagles get you to fill out your expenses etc....yet the pots only so big....the longer it takes to settle, the smaller the pot gets....

SO we need to stop analysing, enuff post mortems already! Lets jsut get on with the process and try something new...

cant see ff getting back in.....people want change and there is so much anger and frustration out there......

FG are not a aright wing party, they stand for nothing under Kenny, there are no differences between FF and FG. FG and Labour are incompatible, there are far too many ideological differences between the two parties.

Fromm a long term perspective there needs to be a bit of ideological choice in Ireish politics

FF/FG on the one side
Labour/Sinn Fein on the other side.

Do you think that Ireland has the political willingness and balls to get out of this situation?... I dont think so.
We are simply in way too much debt to get out.
In my opinion we are prolonging the agony, the IMF must come in.... and then the agony will really start.... but at least the bottom will have been reached.

I had no problem increasing welfare during the celtic tiger but It should only have increased in line with inflation eg if inflation is 2% then social welfare rates shouldn't increase above 2% for that particular year. In the An Bord Snip report McCarthy stated that between 2000-2008 social welfare benefits increased by 101% while the consumer price index was 34% for that period, if welfare rates had only increased by 34% in line with inflation then the basic rate of job seekers benefit would be about €140 per week not €196 per week.

On trade unions especially public sector unions they are only there to represent their own selfish interests not that of society eg if there are more pay cuts and then strikes result then it is society in general who suffer ie kids can't get an education, patients will have urgenet medical precedures cancelled etc. Employment legislation in Ireland is so strong these days that I see no need for trade unions, also public sector strikes should be illegal.

The EU/IMF will be a lot more ruthless than the government but at least the public finances would be sorted out quicker and Irish society would benefit in the long term.

There is no political willingness to take on the public sector unions, personally I think that the assets of the trade unions should be seized if there are public sector strikes and trade union leaders along with bankers should be interned in the Curragh until they are willing to submit to the authroity of the state. Draconian measure are absolute necessary and all narrow minded vested interests must be ruthlessly smashed.

Perhaps the cabinet should be interred and have their wealth removed too. I think your views are perhaps more suited to 1930s Germany and that your own brand of politicians in your eyes should be just allowed to carry on in their own imbecilic way destroying the country. You talk about narrow selfish interest. I don't think we have to look far beyond FF for that.

Godsgift: I said as early as 2002 that the house price rises were unsustainable. The ties between labour and the unions is a red herring here. It was the ties between the government ministers, property developers and bankers that has got us in this mess and keeps us there as one by one they declare bankruptcy after transferring their wealth!

But the traditional FF support are like the consevative support in the uk. They think if we just patch up the banks, we can go back to business as usual. They can't get it through their thick heads that 'usual' will just lead us down the same road we are on now.

The tories didn't bail out the banks in Britain it was the Labour government that bailed out the banks, I also heard rumours that RBS willbe looking for more bailout money next year.

I'm strongly opposed to any form of bank bailouts, banks should be allowed go bust and for the last two years I've predicted that Ireland will need some sort of external financial help and I'm still accused of scaremongering but hey a lot of Irish people like to think everything is grand.

If the government can't raise money to borrow on the international markets next year then they will have no choice but to ask for external help off the EU/IMF.
