The odd thing was that before airplane, he was a serious actor along with a few others. If you ever see the original 1970s version of the poseiden adventure, he's the captain and you keep expecting something funny to happen which of course, it doesn't!
There had been so many airport disater movies out that when Airplane came along it was just so unexpected when all the one liners were thrown in. I can't describe how funny it was seeing it in the cinema for the first time.

It's almost funnier watching him in a straight role and expecting a wise crack of some sort
Not many people know that the Naked Gun was a spin off from a relatively unsuccessful comedy show that lasted just 6 episodes. This clip has one of the most stupid funny comedy lines of all time in it....
