skyblue43: I know your a car man so help me out here as I'll admit to being clueless. Is it possible to get into a higher gear while moving slowly in an automatic? I was always lead to believe it was harder to drive one in snow and ice. Urban myth?

well i dont have gears in my automatic and ive heard that its easier to drive slow in high gear so thats why i assumed that it was harder in an automatic and heard it on the radio that automatics where harder to drive too but i wouldnt really have a clue about cars so i wouldnt know really laugh

and soul, surely you arent lonely right now. we are keeping you entertained cheers

It is if your car is a triptronic (has both gears and automatic). I have a renault megane and they have a triptronic. I wouldn't even chance putting it into automatic because it can go up a gear when you don't want it to and you could end up skidding all over the road.

an automatic still has gears nd a gear shifter, if you put it in the lowest gear (also known as mountain gear) it will drive better in snow conditions than a manual car because the automatic will compensate for the wheel spin like traction control does, unlike a manual where u have to do it yourself with the clutch, also most automatics have a lsd (limited slip differential) build into them.
a lot of older automatic cars (20yrs or more) dont have that so thats where the urban myth came from.
even the expeditions to the north or south pole all use automatics 4wd vehicles instead of manual versions.

Thanks for that...it makes sense now. And my mother wouldn't leave her house all week because she drives an auto and believed the myth. Now she'll be able to go shopping tomorrow. laugh
