The best way to show what poetic meter is, is with this little limerick.

There was a young boy from Japan
Whose limericks never quite went to plan
When he was asked why,
He said in reply,
"I always try to fit too many syllables into the last line." laugh

There was a young boy from Japan 8 syllables
Whose limericks never quite went to plan 8 syllables
When he was asked why, 5 syllables
He said in reply, 5 syllables
"I always try to fit too many syllables into the last line." 17 syllables

Poetry is often like a song in that it has a meter or rhythm. This meter is accomplished by the poet selecting words that total nearly the same number of syllables (accents actually) in each line. At least that's my understanding.

If you're really interested in learning about this here is a good place to look.

Haiku is for poets who can't do rhymes or meter.

In that place that they call limerick heaven
the first two lines must always have seven
then to give it some jive
theres two lines with just five
and the last's just one short of eleven

Oh my goodness I sure did mis-state
It's cause I'm tired the hour is late
The two very first lines
They must always have nine
Two with six then the last must have eight
