ooby_dooby: The best way to show what poetic meter is, is with this little limerick.
There was a young boy from Japan 8 syllables
Whose limericks never quite went to plan 8 syllables
When he was asked why, 5 syllables
He said in reply, 5 syllables
"I always try to fit too many syllables into the last line." 17 syllables

Poetry is often like a song in that it has a meter or rhythm. This meter is accomplished by the poet selecting words that total nearly the same number of syllables (accents actually) in each line. At least that's my understanding.
