Stomach ulcers maybe cured by a simple course of antibiotics.

Most Doctors still don't know about this.

Not all ulcers are caused by H. Pylori. They are more often caused by diet and stress.

Nexium, Protium (my personal favourite), Losec or one of several brands of proton pump inhibitors will treat it initially. Best way to keep the pain at bay is watch your diet, raise the head of your bed between 4 and 6 inches and reduce stress as much as possible.

Keep a food diary and you will find which foods suit you and which don't. Everyone's body metabolises different foods in slightly different ways.

A lot of people claim chocolate triggers the pain.... I don't find that to be the case. Some say bananas help but if they cause heartburn then they are triggering the body to produce more acid and so they are a trigger.

Milk, generally, eases the pain for a little while but then actually makes it worse in most people.

Also, try 2 - 3 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil a day.

I suffered with heartburn for years and it just got worse and worse. I had shares in Rennies and never went anywhere without at least two packets. At it's worst, even water was causing me pain but mainly all the stuff I enjoyed like spicey food, a full Irish or taytos!

It came to a head when I started getting a sharp pain right in the centre of my rib cage and a feeling that someone was crushing my chest! I immediately thought cardiac arrest so I rushed to the doctors!

I heard someone on tv with the same symptoms and with them it was the Gall Bladder.

Anyhoos...Doc sent me off for an endoscopy and they found 4 small ulcers in my oesophegus (mouth to food pipe)! My stomach produces too much acid and it travels up through through the cardiac sphincter to the food pipe. The stomach is lined with mucous to protect the lining from the acid but the food pipe is not!

I was immediately put on 40mg of Protium per day and the problem stopped almost immediately. I reduced to 10 mg but in time the pain came back so I switched back to 40mg!

I've been on it for years now and that one small tablet before I go to bed means I can eat anything I want.....which is probably not a good thing.

My heart goes out to you though. You sit down to a meal or go for a pint and after a few mouthfulls, you're in pain and you can't enjoy your day or your night out!

It's a bit pricey though! I was paying €88 per month till I registered with my mother's doctor in Scotland and now she posts it out free of charge!

If you have a medical card here though it is covered.

That pain is exactly what happened me last night,it started at 1am and didnt stop until 12pm,i was bend over doubled on the bed and couldnt get a wink of sleep, ive had acid reflux for years and the rib cage pain didnt start until a few moths ago,it used to only last for 30 mins or a half hour, but last night was the last straw for me.My Nexium is thankfully only costing me 40/month,im one of those silly people that has to pay VHI,which funnily enough is going up 35%,the one time i get sick.

Thanks for the sound advice thought, fingers crossed i will start to see an improvement. handshake

Ah Protium. Best thing ever invented.

I have chronic gastritis and eosophagitis. I take it when I get flare ups. But since I've improved my diet I seldom need it now.

I was on Zantax or Zantac, can't remember the spelling. Someone told me to try Omeprazole and take one every morning. I haven't had a problem since then. $1 for a strip of ten and I can eat and drink whatever I like. That may not be a good thing but I'm as happy as can be. I think it just puts a lining on the stomach.
I don't want to sound mercenary but will send a strip over to anyone who wants to give it a go. If it works for you then we can come to an arrangement. First strip free. I'm sure the chemists at home are charging a fortune for it.
Believe me it works for reflux. I don't think it works for an ulcer.
