DUBLINGUY1973: Whatever about his personality, to say he was average as a player is laughable. Average maybe if you are comparing him to the likes of such midfielders as Gullit, Matthaus, Zico, Michael Laudrup, Bobby Charlton, Platini, Zidane, Cruyff or Di Stefano but he was far better than most central midfielders playing in his day. Average players don't become captain of the National team or Manchester United and they certainly don't win 4 FA Cup medals, 7 Premiership medals, a Champions League medal, a Intercontinental Cup medal, a Scottish Premier League Medal and a Scottish Cup medal.

Okay you may not like the guy and many people don't after the events in Saipan during the 2002 World Cup and you may not like his personality which is fair enough. He may not have set the world on fire as a manager either but to call Roy Keane an average player is like calling Alex Ferguson an average manager

As for his future, i think he would be better off applying for a job in the lower divisions and slowly building up his reputation again. I thought he did a decent job at Sunderland although he seemed to lose his way with Ipswich a bit. Either way i doubt we have seen the last of him as a manger.
thumbs up

darren9030: Guess what prat had a bet on Ipswich to win the Championship

i hope it wasn't too much! what he did with sunderland to win it was was a miracle. he was always going to be compared to that first season. and remember he kept them up the year after. it doesnt always work out in football. that's why it's so popular.

DUBLINGUY1973: Well if you watched the Champions League Final in 1999, you would see just one reason he was way above average.

He got booked and he knew that should United get to the final, he would be ruled out and instead of letting the head drop, he played out of his skin, scored a goal and inspired United to a 3-2 victory. It was probably his finest performance in a united shirt. Was he tough? Yes but he was very rarely played off the park. He berated Viera in the tunnel that day because Viera was mouthing off to Gary Neville. Viera likes to hear himself talk and thought he was better than everyone else (i suggest you read his autobiography and you will see that) so he needed putting in his place. Thats exactly what Keane did as captain. He wasn't going to let anyone bully one of his team-mates. I think they clashed because they were too alike - huge egos and a massive competitive streak.

Yes Alex Ferguson is one of the reasons (probably the main reason) why he won all those trophies but Ferguson wouldn't have picked an average player as his captain for eight years. A great club doesn't let itself fall apart if one player leaves. No one player is bigger than the club. He was a great leader on the pitch and i don't really think we have really replaced him fully in that respect.

As for a manager, he was average. Lets not forget he did get Sunderland promoted in his first season though plus they were languishing down near the bottom of the championship when he took over. He has to be commended for that. That wasn't easy to bring them from the bottom to the Championship title in one season. I think he will manage a championship team again. When it happens is anyone's guess.Keane's biggest problem was that he was very professional and a massive competitive streak. He wanted to win everything he competed in and he expected the same of his team-mates. He could be too harsh sometimes though. That was probably his downfall. He could probably have prolonged his career if it had not been for that and his tendency towards rash tackles. Aside from all that, just because the guy was tough doesn't mean he was an average player. You are clearly only seeing one side to his game. I'd even go as far as saying you are probably prejudging him because of Saipan and because he was a tough guy, maybe even because he played for United. You have to look at the whole picture though if you are to assess him fairly as a player. In his prime, he would have walked into any team in the world. He WAS that good.

I Didnt read all of that, looks more like a Thesis to melaugh
