As I understand it, the term "Ugly American" is most often used to refer to Americans involved in neo-colonialist invasions and interventions in poor countries around the world. So Obama would really fit the description perfectly if he were only American.

Actually I think the whole thing was done on purpose.
The powers that be WANT Obama to be extremely controversial and unpopular with the majority, while, at the same time, they want him to be considered the last hope for a desperate and violent minority.
Bush set up the laws allowing the President to declare an emergency and seize dictatorial power. Obama will have to use those laws or leave office in total disgrace.
So 2012 promises to be a very eventful year.

That would only give him an excuse to claim that his lack of popularity is due to the republicans.
Nobody likes him.
He very probably won't even get the democratic nomination.
And if he does, there is no way in the world that he will be re-elected (outside of rigging the election).
Which is, sadly, always a distinct possibility.
