Witchaywoman: Avoid E machines and HP. Also, Alienware. They're supposed to be good for gaming. They suuuuuuuuck for surfing the net. I used my brothers for a while. Hated it!

I like Dell. I especially love how the desktops open like a suit case for easy repair. They say Dell laptops have some problem where they claim the battery is dead when its not. But I like Dell the best of anything so far.

Thanks for the info...yeah, I probably won't be gaming too much...do real good to do the normal stuffblushing

I do know a cute little nerd though who likes gamingrolling on the floor laughing

Seems I keep seeing the "Dell" brand mentioned...got to check that one out real good...Thxwave

Don't think I'm that much of a nerd. If anything, my brother Daniel knew more about them as he was a Dell certified tech. If he was still with us, I would have picked his brain for building a new computer.

Gaming for me was a way of "unwinding" and tending to frustration.

My bosses have nothing but Dell and will swear by them

EarthAngelinLove: I'm not looking for all the big bells & whistles...just reliable, reasonably priced, and I'm thinking about laptop in which I could use an internet stick....what's your ideas?

Thanks for sharing

And what's your ideas about antivirus software...what's the best?

I'm googling and shopping around...but I always appreciate the feedback from my CS buds

Not sure if my info will be of any help, but it's an offer to share my opinion with you.

After spending 30+ years in computers, in the repair, and building of computers...I have seen most all brands, and faced with repair of all problems. I've seen computers come and go, and with my experiences...I would suggest a Mac.

All you have to do, to help in making your decision on the type of computer, would be to Google it. By entering "Microsoft vs Mac", and you can pretty much decide which direction you would want to go.

It's true that a Mac is more expensive up-front, but when you have to take your PC (Windows) system to the shop after the warranty runs out...@ a minium of $75 - $85 per visit (for repair, and/or virus removals), then the PC equates to being more expensive in the long run.

It's true you can use all/any brands of Anti-virus software, but there is NO such software that is 100% safe. With some popular software, there are smart viruses that will actually go into your system, and turn your software "off"...and then havoc begins.

I started out using PC's w/Windows myself, but having the advantage of being in the repair of PC's...it afforded me the opportunity to see first hand what Windows was all about. I eventually graduated towards the Mac...and haven't looked back since (except to feel for the Windows users).
I have been running the Mac for the last 10 years, and (believe it or not) have never installed an anti-virus software! ! ! ! Don't need it, and trust me when I say...I looked for any abnormalities!

But this opinion is mine, and giving you the advantage of my experience...wish you luck, and success in your selection. Keep in mind...you can ask any question, and out of 100 people...you will get 100 different answers. Good luck. conversing

I’ve had 3 Laptops and all were Toshiba. I’ve never had problems with them. The one I’m using now is a 17” Toshiba Satellite L675-06X that I bought in November 2010 and paid $699.99 CAD plus tax. I gave my former Toshiba 17” screen to a sister and it’s still running fine.
I’ve often used Kaspersky Internet security/Antivirus software but at the moment I’m using Norton Internet security/Antivirus 2010. Before that I was using Norton Internet security/Antivirus 2009 and never had a problem with them. The only reason I changed from Kaspersky to Norton is because Norton was on sale 40% off at the time I needed it.
When I bought the computer I’m using now Norton 360 version 4.0 Internet security/Antivirus was offered at $10.00 so I bought it, it’s good for 3 PCs and I’ll install it on my computer when my Norton Internet security/Antivirus 2010 expires next July.
It’s worth buying good Internet security/Antivirus software as compared to free versions that can be downloaded. Your computer will be better protected and these softwares usually come on sale in the late summer or early fall and are good for 3 PCs.
I’ve been hearing that Asus computers are quite reliable.

if money is a problem, try craigslist; techies are always selling their computers which are great.

Also has great prices; if money is tight, they have refurbished computers with warrantees.

I have top of the line equipment for my business and it still amazes me how much people pay for computer. I pay a 4th of what they pay for and mine is better. Again, shop around.

I just look at that site mjames thought EarthAngelinLove might benefit from the following info on it

Finding the Best Notebook PC For You

You're a master of mobility and you need a notebook that can keep pace with your places-to-go, things-to-do lifestyle. You're not just looking for a portable PC, you're looking for a portal to your electronic life; a laptop computer to manage e-mail, presentations, work and life planning, as well as your favorite photos, social networking, and serve as your personal media center. Even better, you want a great laptop deal. We get it.

When choosing a portable laptop computer, it's hard to go wrong with a notebook from one of our premier manufacturers. Among our nearly 100 systems are, HP laptops, Dell laptops, Apple laptops, Toshiba laptops, and Sony laptops. All you need are your notebook system requirements. Primary laptop considerations include connectivity, processor speed, battery life, memory, and hard drive capacity.

Wireless connectivity is a must for staying in touch - especially while you're away from home or work. With an 802.11G or 802.11N-enabled notebook, you're never far from the people and places most important to you.

If you're a business traveler with limited work time, you don't want a sluggish laptop slowing you down. Both Intel multi-core processors and AMD multi-core processors are built for speed and performance. Though compact, they work as hard as you do and won't drain your battery.

No power outlet? No problem. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery can run your laptop computer up to five hours or more. Some notebook batteries run longer, but they can add cost and weight to your system; something to think about if you're carrying your laptop around all day. Of course, actual laptop battery life varies based on product setting, usage patterns, and environmental conditions.

Make sure your system has enough RAM, to run all of your required applications. Dynamic RAM, or DRAM is the most common type of RAM used today. A minimum of 1GB of DDR2 memory should be sufficient for the average notebook running modern operating systems, like Windows 7 or Mac OS X. Serious gaming, graphic arts, or multi-media production will require something closer to 4GB of DDR2 RAM. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a system with sufficient memory, but if your laptop is lacking, you can usually add more RAM.

Hard drive capacity affects how much data your laptop can store. At a minimum, look for a notebook with at least a 250GB 5,400RPM hard drive. If you can't leave home without everything you own, opt for a 500GB 7,200RPM hard drive. Don't be afraid to look for a sizeable notebook hard drive. When it comes to laptops, more hard drive does not always mean a higher price.

Computer screen resolution is defined as the number of colored pixels used to make up everything you see on your laptop screen. The higher the resolution, the more pixels used and the better the image looks. Notebook screen dimensions range incrementally from 10 inches all the way up to 19-inch and 20-inch screens. While larger screens are nice, they can reduce battery function and, the larger the laptop, the more it's likely to weigh. Laptops range from $299 up to $1,900 with some laptop prices climbing much higher.

Whatever your computer price point, high-end, mid-range, whether you're looking for a low-price laptop computer, a low-cost notebook PC, an inexpensive, or cheap laptop, we've got a notebook computer to suit your lifestyle and your budget. And, we've got plenty of portable PC accessories to keep your electronics and you on the go in style.
