Avast antivirus is free from Windows, and it is about as good as it gets . I have been told that the pay ones or the delux ( pay ) version of Avast isn't all that much better .

I'm more than happy with the Toshiba Satellite Laptop that i've had now for around three years.
If you go that way, you might look for one with at least 2gig RAM, mine has a 105 gig hard drive, think you can do better than that now, at least 160gig.
I paid $1800 but think you can expect to purchase one better than mine online for between $500 and $700. Though you might like to consider the software (if any) being offered to, it could mean you might expect to pay more.
In my opinion Kaspersky Internet Security Services anti-virus is head and shoulders above others. Its a comprehensive program I believe you can rely upon.

Should probably also check before deciding whether the likes of Norton anti-virus hasn't already been pre-installed on your new computer as its impossible to totally un-install it.
Another catch I've noticed is pre-installed Microsoft Trail Programs, better i think if you need Office etc, get a computer with a OME version already pre-installed. (Copy of disk for it to if you can) (though that's unlikely)
If do go with OME software insure you give consideration to purchasing a external hard drive bundled with image making software to back up your new computers setup

security software: IMO Norton 2010 had some bugs - if u run Windows go to the microsoft site and pick from several reliable selections - F-Secure and Macafee are pretty good

Laptop - my sons have Lenovos and a Toshiba - never any issues with the Toshiba - for electronics Ima nut for SONY and computers a nut for Gateway and HP. But most major manufacturers make a good solid lap/desktop

your wireless card on ur laptop can be used in ur desktop but if u do get a desktop get a pci antennae - infinitely better - good luck!

Avoid E machines and HP. Also, Alienware. They're supposed to be good for gaming. They suuuuuuuuck for surfing the net. I used my brothers for a while. Hated it!

I like Dell. I especially love how the desktops open like a suit case for easy repair. They say Dell laptops have some problem where they claim the battery is dead when its not. But I like Dell the best of anything so far.

For laptops, Dell is cheap and chearful. It's like buying a Ford car. There's plenty about and parts aree cheap.

Normally I don't recomend them as they're not the best for upgrading later but I'm assuming you're not needing any heavy mathematics or gaming or the like.

As has been said, free antivirus such as AVG or Avast is as good as anything. Norton seems to slow the system down too! As for disc capacity....well it's a laptop....so get as much disc size and RAM size as you can get for as little money as you can get.

And you can pick up external USB hard drives cheaply enough, should you need more space.conversing

Many might scoff, but I have an HP COMPAQ laptop, with 320GB hard drive, wifi, CD/DVD drive...with those shiny, clear screens. It's been around the globe twice, flies with me on fortnightly trips away locally for work, I've dropped it on concrete from 1m up without a case, bounced around from seat to floor of my car, recently survived repeated electrical storm outages in Italy**.
What more can I say? it's a grand survivor!!! applause It only cost me about US$560 a year ago.

**I bought a new Samsung netbook in Dubai airport, thinking the lappy was dead. But the sales guy took out the batter, then put it back, and lappy worked. it had been grounded by the electrical storm!

Oh, and the HP Compaq also has the usual built-in mic and webcam, and came with Windows 7 Home Edition.
