In the moment that it takes to come between us, time lifts a hand to wave good-bye, and in the moment that it takes to realize just what we had, that's the moment that it takes to pass us by.

Sometimes, when all life's lessons have been learned, and sun and stars forevermore have set,
The things which our weak judgements here have spurned, The things over which we have grieved with lashes wet, Will flash before us out of life's dark night, As stars shine most in deeper hints of blue; And we shall see how all the plans were right, And how what seemed reproof was love most true.
Then be content our poor hearts; Plans, like lilies pure and white, unfold; We must not tear the close shut leaves apart - Time will reveal the chalices of gold.
And if, through patient toil, we reach the land Where tired feet, with sandals loosed, may rest, When we shall clearly see and understand, I think we will know then what was best.
There was a moment that I wrote about, years ago, when my beloved oldest daughter got out of the car, going to high school for the first time. She slung her backpack over her shoulder, glanced back at me, and looked so young, just so fragile....She had been home schooled, it was her first year of school ever...and I knew that all those days of us waking up and padding around the house together in the early mornings, our whispered secrets late at night, our walks and countless hours watching scary movies and her crazy cartoons she still loves to this day, were gone...the 8 hour a day part of her that I was priveleged to be part of shaping her life, were over, all in that moment, what I took for granted as "everyday" was done...for good. things would change, they already had in that moment. Years later we took her to college, again so tiny and frail, on the curb crying because she wanted to follow us back out to the car, I looked in my rearview mirror and realized another piece of her life was over in that one, solitary second...this year she is graduating, a woman, a lovely, intelligent, capable, confident woman- who is a criminal justice major, already working in the field, a mans field and holding her own. But in those two final moments I watched a lifetime pass and change even as I waved goodbye...God I miss those days of life.
Sometimes memories are best forgotten but there are important lessons to be learned from the good and the bad. There are things I wish I could forget however the lessons are ones that only come with age.
