i'm not sure, but i guess it is an abbreviation for "commercial" as most of the sites (initially) were/are created with this purpose...

From what I thought it stands for "commercail" intent!? Because most website are advertising for something or selling something. like .edu is used for education and .gov, well you get the idea!

.com stands for a for profit COMpany
.net a NETwork of people and such. not for profit but not a recognised entity
.org non-profit ORGanization. Red Cross and other of this type.
.gov. GOVernment websites. and such.
