In response to: Cafeteria chaos: School bans lunches from home
By Kavita Varma-White

Packing school lunches for kids every day is no doubt a chore. But what if you weren’t allowed to?

One Chicago school has banned lunches brought from home, the Chicago Tribune reports. Administrators at Little Village Academy, a public school, say the policy is all in the name of good health. Principal Elsa Carmona told the Tribune she created the policy after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" for their lunch.

"It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke,” Carmona said.

Some kids and parents at the school beg to differ about the food quality, saying it doesn't taste good, and the Tribune reported that dozens of kids threw food in the garbage, uneaten. We don't know what's on the menu at Little Village, but these photos of "an enchilada dish" are less than appealing. And really, when is the last time you sampled delicious fare in a school cafeteria? (I am forever haunted by the glue-like yellowish thing my elementary school called lemon pudding.)

Recipes aside, the policy leaves a bad taste in the mouth for plenty of other reasons.

Unless a student has a medical excuse to bring food from home, the only option other than eating cafeteria food is to eat nothing. (Think those kids will ace a quiz on an empty stomach?) And does something like glucose intolerance merit a medical excuse? What about vegetarianism?

Cost is another matter. What if parents don't want to spend money on school lunch because they can send less expensive food from home?

Related story: What is school lunch really like? One woman ate it every day, and blogged about it

Little Village Academy has good intentions of nutritional tough love. But have they gone too far?

What do you think? Should schools be able to ban homemade lunches?

So long as these school lunches are being fed to the students at not cost I see nothing wrong with this.If they are going to force parents though that seems like they are strong arming parents for money. And if they do have to pay, what of the children whose parents can't afford to pay for school lunches everyday?

I thought this thread was going to be about homemade lunches being banned for another reason ..

Here it would be more likely due to children sharing their lunches with others who have allergies - nut, gluten, lactose etc.

Many kindergartens and daycare centres have already ruled out treats being prepared and brought in by parents, for the children to share on special occasions such as birthdays etc.

Sad really sigh

As far as the thread topic is concerned though, I do think the idea of healthy canteen lunches has merit conversing

Many Australian canteens have long eliminated junk food and fizzy drinks which can only be a good thing.

But as far as forcing this option on parents, nope, I think that's going too far.

Hi Serene, wave

It would be great to have a proper govt funded cafertia at school. I know when my lunch time comes... I choose what I feel like eating... and not everyday, I feel like a subway..

I'd love that children had choices that involved rice and veges and spaghetti and sangas and they could choose. It would eliminate the hunger from those who receive less, it would eliminate the diff between the rich and poor kids... In day care where my granddaughter has been for 3 years now.. she has fared well eating at a table alongside other children.. Its part of social learning..this eating together has many advantages.. and heck, if the govt cannot fund it... well, I would be suprised.. if they can fund a new gym for each school and attempt broadband thro - out a country as large as this on our tiny population, then I'd rather they give food than broadband...
JMO... anyways, what do you think? cheerscheers

Hi Merri wave

Agree totally thumbs up

I was just thinking on this subject and really, it is do-able here.

But it does need to be done well, government funded as you said, and with trained dieticians involved, producing interesting and varied menus that are appealing to children.

We are way up there in the world obesity ranking - what happened to our healthy, outdoor way of life dunno

Plus the fact that we have access to an endless variety of fresh affordable produce, all year round means that we have no excuse but to feed our children healthy meals at home, let alone at school.

Yes, and its do able also, because kids dont really need a fancy masterchef look alike meal... they can be quite well fed on a tray of fresh veges, with some fillings that they can put together together themselves...
and soup is not hard either...

and if all else fails... the ol' tuna mornay can be yummy and give energy...

I wish that would be considered... It would make more sense than having a mum with hardly any time to spare left making whatever outta the fridge...

and those poor souls who's mothers neglect them would be able to dosh up...

( Dont you think that the pokies have a lot to answer for?) as if its true what they say that people shove all their $$ there, then it does not take blind freddy to work out that some kids go hungry... sad flower

Yep, and I like how many schools offer breakfast for kids who would otherwise go through half the day with nothing in their stomachs sigh

And as far as pokies, yeah, that and lots of other things that seem to come before healthy, tasty food for the kids blues

Plus you only have to take a peek at the trolleys going through the checkout to notice the chips, Coke, ice cream etc that costs a fortune and is just empty, nutritionless crap.

Makes you shudder to see people feeding their babes McDonald's fries when they're barely weaned ...

If it was paid for by the government that that would be great. The only thing that would concern me would be is if they would try to force this extra expense on the parents. Not everybody has 20 or so dollars a weeks to give to the schools to pay for school lunches.

Thank you to those who answered.I guess you either did not get the memo or you did but decided to ignore it.

I decided to start this thread basically because of watching Jamie Oliver.I first seen what he was trying to do on British television.I could not believe how much anger and resistance he was met with. All he was trying to do was make sure that kids got good food in them from somewhere at some time during the day.Sure when they go home their parents will still probably feed them junk, but at least they got some nutrition that day.

In my Opinion and my opinion only..I think that's going to far!
Their taking our freedoms a way one by one, they keep adding up!!
Now their trying to tell us what to FEED our Children....We are adults and should be treated as such,we have minds of our own,can think and judge for ourselves what we think is best for our child to eat,not some stranger who doesn't give a chit about my child.thumbs down

We have that program here as well. It's offered to all students for free so that no child will feel like an outcast for having to eat breakfast at school. It's a really great program and one I always donate a little money to each month.thumbs up
