jac379: Or sometimes the truth can be a little confusing. My education was very different to what I do now. Sometimes people find that inconsistent and get suspicious that I'm telling porkies, but its all quite simple when explained. I've seen this happen with other people as well.
I guess I'm kinda quirky about the truth no matter where it applies especially here because we discuss various subjects.

Snuggs09: OMG Jac. I've never seen this man before. You're giving me a bad impression of him......
hi the Ms, Snuggs I am so tired that Iforgot the OP but I got a message today (Very Nice)but I know the pic is not his because the man is huge in his pic but his p;rofile says he is 5' tall. I never encounterd that before.

Interesting that Jac. I have noticed some folk claim all sorts of educational qualifications and can't even spell or put a semi literate sentence together. But when you check the age of the folk it becomes apparent. Under 48 or so the spelling gets worse and the framing of the paragraphs is mmmmmm dodgy.
Funnily enough that shows in the workplace as well, and it is getting worse.
We now have kids at University who can hardly spell and the framing of a paper is poor and these kids are the so called educated ones.
I may be old fashioned but I reckon when we messed about with the old system of the three R's as a basis we went totally wrong. I am not saying these kids are not intelligent but they have never been corrected for mistakes as long as the teachers or markers could read it they got the points.
Shame as it takes a long time for kids to settle in jobs as they cannot get their point over on paper without a spellchecker employers hate this as well. It takes time to correct this problem.

Hi Arlene........where you be girl?
I laugh as I wrote that. There's a song by Jennifer Hudson titled "Where You At". Jennifer was on Oprah one day. The next day people in the Oprah forums complained that she didn't use proper english in the song. If the song title was "Where Are You" Jennifer wouldn't have been able to put emphasis on the words. Amazes me what people complain about.
Snuggs09: For those of you who are searching for the last love of your life, how much truth do you think there is in what people write in the CS forums?
We know that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Is that fair?
Are you impressed with what someone writes on a monitor?
When you read what someone posts, does it entice you to send an email to that person if you are searching for love?
Do you wait to see how they handle themselves in a thread that could have many different opinions?
Do people really divulge their true selves in a public forum?
I think most people write what THEY feel to be true - their interpretation of events, yes
some might exaggerate, or speak hypothetically or even be misinterpreted at times - it's the risk we run when getting caught up in the banter
I think tho over a period of time u can get an idea of what someone is like- even if not the whole picture and even if they don't say much.
As for researching other's posts, no I don't do that but I know some do. So often posts are in the mood of the thread at the time they're made and may not make much sense outside that context. And I do not "wait to see" or follow anyone to see what their posts are like in the threads either. If I was interested in contacting someone I would do so regardless - at the same time I prolly wouldn't want to contact someone who was irritating me in the forums or who I was very opposed to philosophically. jmho

Good post but I have to defend myself for my typos. I have to type fast what I'm thinking or I'll forget it...
Comes with age. CS doesn't have spellcheck so I figure if the reader can't figure out what the word is then I probably wasn't able to make my point in the rest of the post.
Snuggs09: Let me put it this way. This scenario is not all about me.
If I was looking for a man on the internet, I would play nice, right? I certainly wouldn't write about my problems. I would write about things that I want someone to be attracted to.
And Mr. Wonderful sees what I wrote and thinks, hmmmmm, she's a nice girl, I'll send her a flower or an email to test the waters.
I write back.......oh, thank you, blah, blah, blah, and he continues to be interested.
We meet, and after 5 or 6 dates starts I start to reveal what's going on in my life. He's thinking, why did I ever send that email.
My point is, people do everything they can to get someone to be interested in them.
It's a matter of trusting your gut when you send that first email. Is it all worth it????
Well I've decided to post exactely what I want, without trying to appear this way or that way. Same when I disclose stuff about myself. Yeah, I'd love to meet some ... No, I'm not going to manipulate how I appear in order to achieve that.

Under 48???? You´re being too kind Pat Although I would have said the same until I started reading online texts, posts and blogs. Not only CS by the way, and I´m certainly not referring to only spelling and grammar before I get lampooned.

Agree Felix. If I saw someone being argumentative in every post they made (as I have seen here) I wouldn't contact them either. But I do think the profile is important when you are looking for someone special especially that there aren't any lies. When I find an intentional lie, I'm done with that person.
Snuggs09: Would you contact a man going by what he says in a thread?
Well, I don't know about contacting him, but certainly support or state my feelings on the tread...Many things that I have read online suggest to me how much we think alike or vice versa. Makes me wish I had the opportunity to meet them, or certainly at a least begin to form an opinion about them....
Have to say that I am only here for the forum's and friendships that I have made in the years that I have been on C.S.
I do think that people show their true colours on here.I have seen people start off chatting in an amicable way only to burst into flames when "challenged".
How people conduct themselves is their business and is of no importance to me personally.I have learned not to rise to the bait so to speak.
I am however more wary of "personal" mail.A classic example today is from a gent who quotes his own profile page almost word for word, has sent it twice with the same request for contact. Is he genuine? I don't think so.
I just wish people would actually read profiles before making contact, and not waste their or my time.
yes this has been a topic and I know some will use that as a factor in judging a contact - if it's obvious he hasn't read my profile - like he asks a bunch of questions that are answered in my profile or, worse, asks the gneralized "tell me about youself." Errrrr...did u read my profile????
it doesn't make a good first impression - a lot of those I just delete

you just hit the nail on the head. I try to make out what some younger ones are saying all the time and the spelling is atrocious and the girls are even allowed to wear P.J.'s to school aroung here. I think maybe they got rid of Health as a subect.
EagleWoman: Well I've decided to post exactely what I want, without trying to appear this way or that way. Same when I disclose stuff about myself. Yeah, I'd love to meet some ... No, I'm not going to manipulate how I appear in order to achieve that.
I've been on CS five years. When I first joined it was after a terrible breakup and I was broken....not just my heart....but I was broken.
In the beginning I wrote woe is me threads all the time and I would be comforted and then one day a lady made a post right in the thread that she was tired of hearing my sob stories and I should get over it. Needless to say I was embarrassed.
Now I only write about my experience if it is in answer to someone elses cry for help, but most of the time I hold back.
At that time I thought about looking for someone else and I wanted to be totally honest and upfront about what happened to me because it was more than a broken heart.
So I don't think it's a good idea to tell it all in the threads. But, if you don't that person of interest will eventually find out. It's his or her take a chance just like Cardman said.....

yes some are more careful than others. I try to be accurate but I guess I don't pay it much mind - except for the written essay. I tried to do a good job on that. I'm so skeptical about actually finding someone this way (online) that I haven't been as careful of the profiles as I could be, I guess

Even though it is a lass singing this I reckon she says it for me ...
