JAN_is: Well you see, what we see here in the news is the Americans going crazy on the streets and singing death chants, but I´m not so stupid as to believe all Americans are like that.
I don´t agree with your "set way to express anger..." comment though. It´s well known that culture plays a huge part in this as has recently been displayed by the Japanese during their troubles.

Americans are undoubtedly very different to the British.

A bit like some Muslims in a few countries did when 9/11 happened......eerily similar, innit?uncertain

Thats what I meant. Each culture/country is indeed different, and celebrates/mourns/ in different ways.

No way is better than the other.

Americans are different to the Brits, yes. Again, though, no one is superior to the other.

JAN_is: There are so many differences despite sharing a common language, as we have all seen on many an occasion here on the forums.

I posted in one of the numerous Obama threads that Europeans, particularly the more reserved Brits, would not in general, (and indeed are not doing so) celebrate the death of Osama in such a gung-ho way, and perhaps that was why a few people were posting more negative comments. They were of course taken as bashing, which although understandable, was not fair in most cases.

This introduction from an article in the Guardian newspaper says it much better than I tried to.

Revenge is an unfashionable word among post-imperial Europeans, who feel more comfortable with notions of justice, preferably after due legal process. Gleeful Americans, who chanted "USA, USA!" outside the White House after Barack Obama announced the killing of Osama bin Laden, show fewer inhibitions. They do capital punishment too.

I actually think I dislike this thread.

It smacks of some smugness and insinuates Americans are uncouth, or common. It also smacks of judgementalism. I dont like that.

So, as they say on Dragon's Den...Im out.

Perhaps what we are seeing is Relief, more so than Revenge. And the release of pent up anguish and frustration. Hope for a more peaceful future?

Most the interviews with Americans that I have seen, it's not celebrating his death ( most stated that it didn't feel right to feel good about it ) but were happy he had been found and the most affected by his actions talked of finally feeling closure.

No matter what country would have found him, it would have ended the same way... he had no plans to be taken alive.

tallman51: Just kiddin as usual !!
I am glad for the american people today.
It brings closure for a lot of innocent folk.
Let's hope that the backlash will not be bad.
I feel that every country has it's trouble makers and terrorists.
This would be a much nicer worl without them !

Now don't go pissin me off and forcing me to make nasty comments to you, only to find out you just like messin with people...Now I'm not sure what to think of you...Ughhhhh.

Lonely1: Good topic.

Lets broaden the OP a little further: The brits are more class conscious than the americans. Most of the rules and protocols about royalty are just designed to maintain the queen and commonwealth, etc. The US will quickly invade your country for what? (Think Grenada).

Ok, waiting for the backlash

No backlash necessary....Each country has different cultures. Unfortunately, those who do not live in the U.S. really have no clue how we feel. All you can go by is what you see on TV or read. Your not here living the culture. Making general comments like "The U.S. will quickly invade your country for what?" only shows ignorance.

how quick we are to condemn peoples actions in reaction to what has been very difficult time for many people not just Americans , but as usual Americans are the"bad" people. give me a break. why ? because some aren't reacting quietly like you think they should. why? because it isnt their right to feel happiness or relief or patriotic. Young Americans aren't Patriotic???? oh please inform the many parents who have lost their children who joined the armed forces to fight for our freedom and against terrorist.

Notice how when the brain dead spew out garbage with zero evidence to back it up, then are challenged. They seem to disappear? Kind of like being a telephone or chat room tough guy....more muscles in their lower jaw than their whole body!
