Eve wasn't the first woman, she was no.3 There was a woman made as Adam was, but he panicked at seeing her being made from the inside out. She's never named or mentioned again. God puts Adam to sleep and creates Lillith, who is rebellious, and goes on to leave Adam and the garden. She refuses to come back and is cursed for disobeying God.
Then we have Eve, made from Adam's rib. It didn't really work out there in the long run, but after three tries God kinda gave up.
