Recently, I started a job up the road as a Hotel Front Desk Receptionist, working evenings in order to get some extra money in to pay for some forthcoming large expenses.

I have found the way people treat me in this service role varies immensely. Some, actually most, treat me with courtesy and mutual respect. There is a small minority, however, that seem to be of the opinion that anyone in a service role is of a lower social rank to them and that gives them the right to treat them condescendingly and rudely.

I am an intelligent, well-travelled and well educated lady who has worked in law and office management for many years. However, since taking this position for a while I have found that some guests will treat you appallingly.

What they forget is that although they are paying guests, service staff "service" them; deal with their problems, help them out etc. If they treat me like crap, they will not get the best from me either!laugh

I believe that everyone should be treated with respect, irrespective of job. I have found this period to be a further eye-opener into human nature and how rude we can be when we think we can get away with it.

Ever experienced anything similar?dunno

Well I practically live in hotels at the moment, and the majority of staff are well trained and 100% professional, they manage to convey an attitude of concern and helpfulness without giving up their personal dignity. I usually make friends with them especially waiters and barpersons, it's surprising how a good relationship can work in your favour.

Only occaisionally have I found staff to be distant and not interested, but not in the larger hotels, they are too well trained.

thumbs up

I do realise that many hotels these days employ cheap labor, kids who have no experience and no customer service skills. However, it is clear to look at me that I am not a kid! And therefore I find it outrageous that, simply because of the role I am in at present, people treat me differently to when I worked in a law office.

Do we really judge others on their occupations? Seems some do..dunno

Hiya..wave grin

There is no doubt that some people in service roles are not trained correctly, or are simply not suited to that role.

I have always said as regards Managers, people are not always automatically good managers. People Management is a skill, and some either just dont have it, or need sound training before being let loose on the Unsuspecting Public..laugh

Yes, agreed.thumbs up

However, in a service role you cant just walk away; its part of the job to deal with people - rude, polite, and treat them the same. Its very hard though, and I find it unbelievable that anyone who knows they can "get away" with less than unacceptable to others simply because they know they can.

I have never been rude to any service staff, even if I thought them completely incompetent and stupid. I know that I get more out of others with honey than with vinegar.grin
