TrueBlue1986: Nothing, but it is allowing concessions to be made to those of lower means, afforded by those of higher means.

Not really Blusey....When you allow poverty level "income" earning individuals even a little disposable income per year, they feed that money back into the economy which in turn offers the high wage earners more opportunity to make even bigger salaries with respect to wants and needs in a healthy economy.....like I said, it all works together, it's all about checks and balances, self regulating money flow, following the the money flow...the process is very complex, but the concept is relatively simple...

montecito: We also pay tax on toilet paper, paper towels, soft drinks, ice cream topping but not ice cream (if that makes snese) and many other foods that we pay tax on.

And Venere, your assumption that the majority of Americans don't pay their income tax is wrong. Those you don't pay get away with it for awhile but in the end it comes back to bite them with interest fees.

In the grocery area, we pay tax on anything eatable except carbonated drinks...we even get taxed on that. Where I am, I have taxes taken out from where I live AND where I work. The more you make, the more they (The government)takes. As most have said, anyone and I do mean anyone who skips out of paying their taxes, it WILL come back...you can run but you can't hide. hole

Hi Unique!!wave In Tennessee, we pay only Federal tax, no state, no local......However, we have a state sales tax rate of 9.75% on everything!!..Our infrastructure is in great shape, our TennCare is being funded, things are in pretty good shape compared to most of the states in the Union....I have always believed a high sales tax rate as opposed to State and Local taxation is the best and most "equitable" way for states to generate revenue...the rich naturally pay more because they have more purchasing power...and the not so rich get a bigger "take home" check..yay

Hi Leigh wave Here the rate of the sales tax depends on the county you live in. I don't mind paying local taxes where I live but to pay for them where I work as well...doh My family is from Tenn. I've considered moving back there after my youngest graduates. I miss the mountains.

In response to:
DEAR Barack, Last year I mismanaged my funds and this year my family and I cannot decide on a budget. Until we can come to a unified decision that fits all of our needs and interests, we will have to shut down our check book and will no longer be able to pay our taxes. I'm sure you'll understand. Thank you very much for setting an example we can all follow.

Form-letter response:

Dear Taxpayer,

Don't worry about the checkbook thing.
To save you the trouble of sending us a check we just plunder your salary before you even get paid.
And if by accident we don't take enough for all our wars and other amusements, no problem, we'll just bill the shortfall to your grandkids.

Barak

venere08: A brief interjection from someone who doesn't know what she's talking about... Regarding one type of tax...I thought it was unconstitutional for US citizens to pay income tax and that only very few indeed pay if at all.
rolling on the floor laughing Maybe you have misunderstood your source for this information. Google is your friend if you are really interested in the tax system in the United States. professor

Your post did make me laugh so it was still fun to read. I think what is so funny is we are actually taxed to death. There is actually an old saying here that has been around for years.
" Only two things in life are sure taxes and death" giggle
