Okay, now I have to be very practical here.... so I would totally ignore the 40,000 and the 200, for the simple reason that the earth is running out of food and water, and we need less humans... they just require too much sustenance, and they damage everything they touch. Not that the 40200 would make any more room for animals, but it would help a little bit. So I would go for the friend in the car.
If you can prevent an earthquake, then you can do anything and that means you can also land the plane safely and save your friend as well...but as smoky said, since we are all earthly beings (not considering the fact that the ladies in here are celestial bodies
