Do you know what an oil shale operation looks like or what it does to the aquifers? Google that. Then think about what will be left of Wyoming, Colorado and Utah and all the other states attached.
It takes 4 times as much water per shale to process, Canada uses 40% of all it's natural gas simply to heat the shale to release the oil. So you call destroying thousands of acres of pristine land, the waste of natural gas and the death of water ways and wild life something to be gleeful about? You wouldn't think so if they were in your neighborhood. Oil shale tailings and used water are toxic. Oil sands only became feasible when gas prices hit all time highs, so count on them staying up there. 10. What is the oil shale upgrade facility?
Shale oil flowing out of above ground operations must be cleaned of contaminants and/or be “upgraded” to make a range of products. Shale oil “cleaning” often involves the removal of sulfur. Shale oil upgrading generally includes additional processing equivalent to crude oil hydrocracking (required to convert oil-shale distillates to gasoline). Upgrading also removes arsenic and nitrogen using hydrotreating.
An upgrade facility could generate over 3,000 metric tons per year of spent catalysts, treatment chemicals, and sludges and byproduct wastes. Upgrade wastes of concern may include (at a 1 million tpd plant) 5400 tons per year of spent hydrotreater guard bed catalyst containing 20 percent arsenic and potentially hazardous API separator bottoms which may generate 7200 tons per year.
Wastes from the upgrade operations are not exempt from hazardous waste requirements, and may(Oh please ), in some cases, exhibit a hazardous characteristic. EPA is not addressing or seeking comment on those wastes, which are of much smaller volume relative to the spent oil shale.
And considering that the oil industry will certainly be buying off our elected officials to get the EPA to turn a blind eye on the toxic byproducts issues... and the people and wildlife who live in those areas.
I can remember one of our former treasurers encouraging the US to regulate their banking sector about five to ten years ago. It never happened sadly.
I'm glad the same treasurer tightened up our banking industry. The banks here in Aus may be total pricks but I am glad they didn't go through the crisis that the banks in Europe and the US went through.
Still a big problem over here with international corps going bust. In my home town a local business that a few years ago was purchased by a US company was closed down as that company went bust.
In all it cost three hundred full time jobs in the first week. Over the next two weeks another five hundred casuals in retail and hospitality positions around that area lost their jobs as people had no money to spend.
I suppose the lesson their for governments is dont let your local businesses be taken over by an overseas business.

Yep... great solution for the country.
The short term future of power generation is micro reactors. Once electricity prices start to rise watch the green protesters who can't tell a nuke from a reactor simply get ignored. Clean green micro reactors and wide area beamed solar catchment will change the world. As for current coal/oil power generation, despite what the greenies say there is a great deal that can be done to reduce their pollution and make their clean sources of energy.

That's if your government has a conscience... ours has been sadly lacking one for a quite a bit now. Can't trust them as far as we can throw them these days.

Radical environmentalists!..70% of the Green River shale is government controlled... Fed owned and managed!....Now that oil prices have risen, production of shale oil is viable Gin...The shale can be extracted by mining underground or from the surface and after mining, the land is reclaimed......

Start from the 1980's crises (a blueprint that was ignored!)...Government erred, not right or left!...Turned a blind eye to excessive risk taking......AND, the "current" administration grossly mishandled the 2008 crises!...Not about Dems vs Republicans, it's about MASKING the problem for nearly 3 decades!..Having NO coherent plan to deal with 2008 crises!..... Congress never enacted TARP, instead they "purchased" toxic assets and recapitalized with tax payer money!!... There are too many "agencies" regulating financial institutions...The system is fragmented, complex, and politicized!.... We need to focus LESS on failure, and MORE on preventing future failure...

It's been you guys blaming the liquorice stick, the party, the present... when this has all been steadily spiraling out of control for decades! It's not the government per se that is the problem... but the manipulation and deviation of said government employees from what's best for the nation. It's broken... and we need to acknowledge that before it will ever be possible to find the myriad fixes necessary to get us back on track from this spoiled brat, palm buttering mentality that has sunk us in this hole we find ourselves in.
