Heres something I've thought of several times before that was recently echoed brilliantly by a friend offlist.
Cats and ladies...there's something about that connection, particularly in one example that comes to mind...that's always intrigued and puzzled me. Cats by and large are surely the most controlling of creatures: they're aloof when they want, and demanding in an utterly selfish way when they want attention or food or affection or whatever. In a thread I authored some time back "Sleeping With Cats," many of lady respondents confirmed that cats had them "curled around their clawed little paws." Cats, according to many of the women, got their way, and the women were happy to give in to them.
Now here's the quandary: These very same women often appear to be the most man-independent types - I mean, they proclaim their independence of men and yet at the same declare themselves to be happily dominated by their cats. Sometimes I've noticed myself doing something rather similar to a cat - in effect, pawing at the blinds to get love and attention from a female - but while that earns the cat only more dominance and affection and love, when I've tried it I get slapped down like a pesky fly on a meathook.

Go freakin' Figure...
I think its because we know that we have the freedom and the power to NOT take care of the cat. We just dont wield it.
whowhatwherewhen: Hmmm, interesting. I would think that in a relationship, you are required to care for and feed your partner and anything else you can do that shows you love them. Humans are human (mostly) and animals are animals. We have different relationships going on with them.
Well, I don't want to push this analogy too far. Sure, there are differences...I think. For one, I suspect some of my lady friends may have more respect for their cats...consider them to be family more than they would consider me to be.

Really? Why do you feel like that? Do you have a need to be number one with all your lady friends? Any animal that is a family pet IS a family member. I love my cat.

Yeah, I know, County. Gals can be just as devoted or more so to their canines. However, I have seen plenty of mutts wrapping their owners around their paws, too. So has Cesar Milan.

No, not ALL my lady friends. I love my cat, too, but never would consider her equal to my partner or on the same footing value-wise.
Now this interesting, because in your first post you indicated there is a difference between people and cat and people-people relations, and now you kind of sound as if you do in fact put your puddy on equal footing with people (and possibly even your SO?) Kind of confirms my thesis, doesn't it, Who?
I don't mean to put words in your mouth - just saying it sounds as though that's what you're saying. If not, what then would you say the difference in these relationships is (or should be)?

I agree with you. I did say that. I think what Im trying to say is, while animals have a place in our families, we recognize their time on earth is generally short. We have emotional attachments to them but, I dont think anyone (in their right mind) would put an animal before a human family member. We love our pets for what they are and the joy they bring us. We love our families far more deeply.
I'm sending my Jedi mind manipulating spells your way, Venie. You will drive across the border tonight...come to my place...pick up the paint brush...and begin painting my place...
