SundanceWCork: Think of this site like anyplace in the real world. If someone came up to you in a bar or a nightclub and said hello would you reply or would you just walk away or stare into space? Here you have the added protection that it is not the real world so it's an even safer place to acknowledge another human being and remember people here are real people not 'pale faces' or 'fat ones' or anything else.
If your mailbox isn't too overflowing perhaps it would be worth a couple of civil mails just to pass the time and drop a hint. If you have a person who will not let go or a THIS MAN IS ONE NASTY BULLY then there is the option to block his emails. But who knows, maybe he will have a good lookin' friend.
Personally I chat to anyone who mails me as long as they are civil but sure do whatever you feel is right for you and don't forget to enjoy the place. It's not all stalkers, NASTY BULLIES, and weirdos. Remember, it's real people with real feelings.

but if I reply with something like 'I'm good thank you' then that leads to another reply from them, which just leads to mails back and forth just cause you don't want to be rude with someone your not interested in...anyone else have this problem, or am I particularly bad at this stuff

if someone mails you you shou;d mail them back i think , if you find yourself going back and forth with mails thens you have a friend so you are on a winner
if you dont physicaly find him attractive by looking at a picture ...you can still be friends
