I was reading an article in todays Sunday Times that the govenment is considering reducing eligibility for the one parent family payment from 14 down to 7 for the youngest child to be phased in over a number of years, what do people think, personally I think it should be like America where single parents are legally obliged to look for work when the youngest child reaches three.

And how many children are you two raising, single-handed, and without a cent in support from the Mother?

This alleged cut is gender bias at it's finest.

jaette: no what the need is food stamps, we throw money out and get no return, christmas is coming and once again we are expected to have the largest spend per household by a long way

In America if someone has been unemployed for 99 weeks they lose all cash benefits and are reliant on food stamps or charitable assistance to fend for themselves.

fifitheminx: and they get pregnant alone..?

what if ur a child of said .."unambitious woman"..do u deserve a dogs life?

its called one parent allowance..male or female can apply for it..

whoever is raising the child.

if ur not getting assistance from the other parent u can capply for it.

the "kids getting houses for opening their legs" thing is gone out with the indians ...ur on a housing list for bout 8 to 10 yrs thesedays.
that depends on the amount of kids, if you have more than the one child you move up the list

Just one... bravo

I worked with three, had two more (one special needs), then separated.

Am I to tell my kids that they aren't allowed to eat any more? "Sorry kids we have to live on the beach, but we'll be ok so long as the tide is out and it's not stormy. No, no... no new shoes for you any more, it's bare feet from now on. Forget about your birthdays and Christmas, Easter eggs and those school tours are just frivolous anyway. No coat, you don't need it".

Am I to tell my 7yr old: "I'm sorry son, I can't take you to your Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Phisiotherapist or Physhologist visits any more because the MEN who run this country have decided that the kids just aint worth it"?.

that is how it should be, we have a welfare state that we can't afford

Yes fathers should be forced to pay child maintenance for their kids, I've no problem with that, we need to be just as tough as the yanks when it comes to deadbeat dads in the same way the Americans in the 90's implemented yough love when it came to dealing with the huge unemployment rate that existed amongst single parents in America in the mid 90's.

It was your decision yo have 5 kids, its not the responsibility of the state to be a bottomless money pit when it comes to welfare benefits, the individual not the state is responsible for their own personal wellbeing. There is far too much of a handout, dependency culture in a lot of working class ghettos in Ireland.

You think I was alone when I conceived? That I'm solely responsible for these children being alive?

Think again.

As for the states responsibility... many sole parents have court orders for maintenance which are not being adhered to and our lovely law system just shrugs it's shoulders... bring the weight of responsibility back to the other parent, before ditching the kids in the gutter by taking away their attending parents only source of income.

I agree with you Its shocking the way the state doesn't enforce child maintenance orders, As I said in another post American style tough love is required when it comes to maintenance payments as well as reform of the welfare state.

u know i worked from 5am everday taxiing...for the same reason a few years back..opposite hours to my ex..so i could keep the creche hours to minimum..and we were still scrimping.

and yeah it felt like an uphill struggle and everyone getting help seemed way better off..and absolutely..not all of them needed it

but at the same time i knew people who did...

ye cant tar everyone with the same brush in these situations i find.

it's not about the recipient, as far as im concerned the payment should not exist

There are roughly 450,000 people currently unemployed in Ireland, most of who would rather be working but the sad fact of the matter is that sucessive governments have expanded the welfare state so much that thanks to the generous benefit system that exists in Ireland a lot of single parents or couple with kids are better off financially on state benefits than actually bettering themselves and going out to work.

50 years ago in Ireland, the welfare state was miniscule in Ireland and a widow, widower, deserted wife or deserted husband with young children had no other alternative but to go out and work because welfare benefits were miniscule.
