kennyfromdublin: I disagree America is broke also. Obama is finding out that its social security is seriously unaffordable and needs to be cut back, its the same with all of Western European countries which have more expanise welfare states than America.
so if its not working there what makes you think it will work here
salanky: so if its not working there what makes you think it will work here
Welfare reform in America in 1996 was very sucessful in America, from 1996-2006 the number of single parents in employment increased by 54% after Clinton implemented quite drastic welfare reform so conservative welfare reform is quite sucessful in getting people back to work, it is morally wrong for an able bodied person not to be seeking employment.
fifitheminx: i agree a reform...of everything is needed..maybe not as harse as the former proposals..
but as usual the weak are being targetted ..thos raising kids.
if ur ex found herself out of work tomorrow..and homeless..
its ur childs neck on the line also.
I provide childmaintenace to my kid each week, obviously if my ex lost her job I would provide more financial assitance and if necessary come and live with myself, my ex has a mortgage and has done quite weel for herself.

thats all well and good if theres jobs out there for people to take. i know plenty of people on the dole who couldnt be bothered getting off their lazy asses to even look for work never mind actually doing it but there are others who just cant find work for various reasons. i think it would cost them more money to get something like this set up though i could be wrong of course

To create jobs a lot of painful decisions need to be taken, this may include getting rid of the minimum wage as well as abolishing wage agreements in certain protected sectors of the economy. Welfare reform would work out cheaper in themedium term.

jaette: i disagree there, it was the expectations of a spoiled people that ruined this country, were you watching the brian cohen docu last week and it showed charlie mcreevey on the late late show and getting boos because he hadn't given away enough in his budget, bertie obliged and sent him off to europe
I absolutely hate Fianna Fail with a passion, one of thereason why I despise them is because they massively increased the welfare state so much between 1997-2008 in particular where it is now completely unaffordable and has massively contributed to the entitlement culture that afflicts certain sections of society.
salanky: getting rid of minimum wage? how will that help
It would create more jobs as it would less costly for businesses to hire, for instance isn't it better to have someone working for €6 per hour than been on the dole.

how do you expect people to live on 6€ an hour, if you do a standard 35 hour week thats 210€ a week, if i was on that then 60 would be gone straight away on diesel leaving €150 to cover food, rent/mortgage, electricity/gas, car insurance, clothing and a lot more.....could you manage

I just find it odd that yet again those in power have us fighting with each other just like we did over the public / private sector debate whilst not a single banker was prosecuted and continued to receive bonuses and politicians awarded themselves huge pensions.
Only today I've discovered that Government ministers are claiming mortgage tax relief on second homes inspite of Enda Kenny stating 2 years ago that this was wrong and that when put in government he would put a stop to it.
So it's business as usual. Screw the welfare for all you can get. Our leaders are doing exactly that.
That money goes to the people. The people spend that money in shops, outlets, petrol pumps... you name it, that's where it's spent.
Remove that money and nobody goes into these retail outlets. No customers -> no need for staff -> no shops, or anything else where stuff can be bought -> business go bust -> more unemployment -> less wages -> less tax intake -> fewer services (Gardaí, Nurses, Teachers etc) -> a poorer and poorer population -> more crime -> anarchy!

Yes I could manage, its called economising, sell the car, buy clothes in charity shop, look out for special offers as regards food, reduce your rent by haggling with your landlord or renegotiating your monthly mortgage payments with your lender.

Cutting off welfare effects the whole.
I disagree reduce the costs of doing business in Ireland eg reducing red tape, reducing rents for businesses, reducing utility bills. Fodd vouchers would also be spent in retail outlets.

There are many valid reasons for the minimum wage, not least of which it cuts out inhumane treatment of workers and illegal immigration. If an employer were to put a value on a job I would bet its less than what they are paying in 99.9% of cases. The minimum wage is not the problem here.
A lot of people need to get up off their h**e and work in jobs they deem beneath them. That would stop a lot of money leaving the country for a start.
