Should all prospective parents be forced to take a Parental Aptitude Test to see if they will make good parents?

What would happen if they took such a test and failed, sterilisation, once a dumba** always one, right!

Would you pass the Test?

Who´s going to set up the guidelines of who makes a good parent? Some bigotted, repressed, brainwashed, mind controlled bureaucrat who thinks anyone acting different from his/her guidelines is a dumba**?

Or may be religious leaders should do it? Hold on a minute!!! Don´t they already show you how to brainwash your children?

We have tests/rules and guidelines in this Country for other responsibilties, why not parenting.

If you want to go to an animal shelter to rescue a dog then they assess you to see if you'll make a fit and proper owner.

Someone yes would need to set up the guidelines, and no doubt it would be a government figure.

Defo I wouldn't!

My 6 years old daughter has been in volcanos, caverns, clifts , frozen rivers , valleys , mountains, an island in the middle of the pacific ocean , oh and had a great time on a GIANT SLIDE where no ADULT would dare to get but she did LOL. (We heard "bravo!!" when she was done lol)

Ah! and yesterday for mothers day we went to a fair... she laughed like crazy on the kamikaze plane thing. Scary.

So I guess that If such a test comes up anytime... They would clasify my motherhood as... "Insane" and get me to a mental house or something

lol

Tests rules and guidelines are only as good as the wisdom of the person who wrote them. Without wisdom they only serve to protect from fear and put people in boxes!! Unhealthy!!

We don´t "own" our children!! Guidelines for ownership of pets are relative to country and society. No doubt their guidelines accept "good owners" who live in a flat as long as they promise to "walk the dog" (on a leash) a couple of times a day!!! Yet we all know the dog would be happier in a house with a big piece of land where they can chase butterflies and dig up holes!!!

Government figure, you mean like Bill Clinton, the Bush lot etc?

Scary!!!

yep it may seem scary......
Most Countries require a test to be passed by an indivdual before they are allowed to be responsible for driving a car, are we saying raising a child is less a responsibilty than driving a car.

Yeah ok you may have a point when mentioning Bush and Clinton, jeeeez I didn't say it was flawless roll eyes grin

As an after thought, with parental testing, had it been in place some years ago, it may have stopped Bush and Clinton from existing, now there's a thought

Tooo late, my children are already grown ups.

Would a test define if a person can be a “good” parent? I do not think so.

The same way we are dissimilar as parents there are also differences among children and some children are easier to love others are a challenge, well worth the effort.

Another facto to consider is the place and time for the parenting.

Yet parents-want-to-be can –this time- get a great deal of information on parenting and that can give them an enormous advantage for the education of their children.

Just to consider how to be a good parent is a great start.

great post, some good valid points raised, I shall file them in the relevent location grin

perhaps then we need to double up the aptitude test with an IQ test, or maybe a simple reading test, if they can't read, then your idea is invalid

In old times -even this times- some people did not know how to read and they raise their children to be good persons and great citizens.

How would they have taken that test that you are proposing?

I agree that education and support for parents is the better route because there is not honestly anything that we can do to prevent someone from becoming a parent if they so choose.

I can think if several community resources that were available to me that allowed me to have free time to exercize and provided classes for my kids in art & gymnastics & sports - from quite a young age, there were preschools, inexpensive sitting services, clothing exchanges (baby clothes), parks, outdoor & indoor activities sponsored that kids & parents could do together....the list goes on in terms of the community resources available that helped me be a better mom

well dear man, how many children have you actually raised so that you are qualified to evaluate the challenges & the worthiness of your idea?

it is your pie in the sky idea that is not valid, sweety....but makes for an interesting discussion.wave

Aha that would though be part of the aptitude test, "how to be a better parent", and it seems you would have passed that section with flying colours
