I try to support local jobs, I employ Irish workers and I food shop in the local shops and supermarket, because they employ Irish and a lot of their meat, veg, fruit etc is produced locally and is good quality.

Thats a fair enough comment Stan, but people tend to show according to their budget. And sometimes Irish products are more expensive than imported goods.

Yes, I usually try to buy local food, other food like milk, meat etc. I check the labels and buy Irish. Other things like certain fruit or veg I prefer to buy from Europe than let's say Africa because of the transport. Wouldn't buy New Zealand lamb or Brazilian beef, because you can get it from Ireland, and to keep an eye on the carbon footprint.

I may not come across as a Green, but I like my food organic and don't mind paying a bit more and knowing the livestock were treated well and the fruit and veg isn't full of chemicals or God knows what.thumbs up

I'll shop with quality and price in mind. Generally that means red meat from the butchers. Lots of the other stuff I'll buy in ALDI. Electronic equipment I'll buy abroad sometimes, depending on what it is and how quick I need it.

I know it can be a problem, but why should imported products like meat or milk products be more expensive, it's the supermarkets taking the piss.

It depends as well where you shop, I know your local little shop is great and I use it for certain things as well but there is a price difference between them and some of the bigger retailers. So I do buy Irish but I do shop around as well.

I've said the same on the EU forum here about the chemicals sprayed on crops today. And I'm with you, if you can pay over the odds for a better product, better quality, you'd be a fool not to do do it.

But some families etc, don't have that option and are forced to buy according to their budget. Thats all I'm saying.

And the point about you being green, with the amount of GAA you play, played or support. You couldn't be any other colour but.

I tend to do the same (similar) but for eletrical goods I'll look online first. But in the UK eletrical goods are on the whole fairly cheap.

That is one thing I loved about Paris, been there a couple of times, the markets where you could buy produce fresh from the countryside, they are trying to start that here with farmers markets but I have found the choice limited and my local shops have better quality.

Oh I am a true Gael alright, however same as your good self,I am not so blinded by hatred that I can't see the other crowds viewpoint, even if I don't agree with it.. thumbs up

.

I'll give Paris credit were it's due. I used to live close to Rungis (one of the biggest market hubs in Europe) and the fresh fruit and veg brought into there daily is frightening.

Maybe Irish famers should take a few ideas from their brethern in France. One thing about them is they stick together; And the number of times they walk into large stores and trash forgein products or stage pickets outside them demanding they supply more 'locally' produced goods instead of imported ones..Lets say, I've lost count of the number of times I've seen farmers do that in real life and on TV.

A 7/11 is bascially your local corner store that employs local people and helps the local economy. And they are generally open from 6am until 10pm-midnight but saying 7/11 (I think it's an americanism) sounds better.

Centra, Spar etc are part of a chain, while your 7/11 is generally an indepentant retailer.JMO

On the french language thingy, it took me a good few years to speak and understand it properly. It's a bollicks of a language to learn.

From a friends FB page...

Fiscal policy...

I give my children €5.00 pocket money. Then I tell them they have to give me back €10.00 as I need it to run the household, as I had spent all my money gambling. Then I tell them to go out and spend because the country needs us to spend in order to get the economy moving. They say where will we get the money to spend? I say I will borrow it but you and your children and your grandchildren will have to pay it back. How much of the money will we get from this borrowed money. Oh, you dont get any. You just get to pay it back. OK says the kids, but how does that help the ecomomy? Don't ask silly questions, I say. Just trust me.

Most people automatically assume because that a product has a Bord Bia mark that it was born/raised/culled/processed in Ireland. Meat that is sourced from outside Ireland, but culled &/or processed here also carries a Bord Bia mark.
To know for sure you have to look at the back of the packet for the numbers, any that begin with IE are fully traceable back to the source here in Ireland, anything that begins with E or EC has an origin outside of Ireland and went through some form of processing here. But how many people actually look at the back of the pack?
