I think this concept of extreme elements being less than .1 % or 1 % of the community is not the crux of the issue. There is a vast 'moderate' section of the religion which is passive and does not curtail the extreme elements. This passive approval is the prime problem. The extreme elements are not the issues as they declare themselves! the moderates are a bigger challenge because they are quite.

Well, you know...it's always the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. laugh

But seriously, do you mean that the moderates are the bigger problem because they do nothing to resolve the 1% problems?

Interesting thought!

Yep. No self regulation, because it suits the moderates not to. Well, if history is any lesson, they sow the seeds of their own destruction.

**The main challenge for moderates is that there is a huge variation in what is defined to be moderate. Atleaste 30% of moderates still consider themselves muslims first and other identities later. Now this is a huge aspect considering most Christians, Hindus or even communists (lol, yes they are faith I feel - they dont buy reason!) wont show allegiance to religion over and above country.

**More than 20-30% of the moderates also beleive God's law is superior to a country's laws. Of course there are other moderates who are more liberal, dont belive in 6th century concept of modesty and all.

Overall - Moderates are not all liberaes among muslims.

All the other religions have adpated practices to modern world more quickly than muslims. Muslims will gradually adapt over next 100-150 years is what I reckon. and the biggest challenge in adpating to the new age? their staunch belief that the Koran is the world of god itself and hence timeless. So its a paradox. Other religions have lesser challenge because there is a lesser vehement claim of verbatim availability of 'God's' word. Even the bible is regarded as guidance through the divine spirit (am I right here?).

I wont be alive to meet a vastly liberalised islamic society but am very optimitic for their adaptation in the future

Good quotes thumbs up

What I don't get is that people stand by and let these things happen.

I will ask two questions that has not been asked in this thread.

1) Should a Christian (like the girl) be tried in a Sharia Law court?

2) Should any non Muslim be tried in a Sharia Law court?
