Aw.. don´t be fed up. What you are looking for is an elusive quality. Maybe you are obsessing about it and forgetting to enjoy the love that you have in your every day life. The here and now is very important too.

You may have had a real opportunity at some point but failed to

Oh good lord.. Madison Avenue at work. All love is true. There is no such thing as untrue love. If it's not true, it isn't love. It's something else.. infatuation, lust, convenience, habit, etc.
Be open to love other people. There is nothing wrong with that. Whether or not they return it is up to them. I have a feeling you are looking for that elusive soulmate, that person that will be nutz about you and you about her .. sort of like in the movies. Pal, it doesn't exist.. even if it exists it isn't like in the movies. That kind of happiness only exists for moments. Anyone who says different is telling you a bunch of poopoo.
The reason why it does not and cannot exist like that is because people and everything around us constantly changes. The biology changes, new information comes at you, you think new things, etc. You are not the same person today that you were yesterday. Think about it.
If you want "love" that is never changing, then you have to find an imaginary friend (sort of like god) and pretend that god always loves you. That works for the majority of people. (Don't mean to offend by being clinical).
Sorry for the long rant, but consider this: People die. Anybody can die at any moment. Even if you find someone that you think is right for you, that may not last. For any chance at peace, look within yourself. Do not look for another person to make you happy. It's an effort in futility. Rather than search like a madman (thousands of dating sites, as you said), try to get to know the people that you like and if you are the kind of person who has a lot of love to give, focus on those who are grateful for it, like orphan kids or help animals or volunteer in a hospice, etc.
