A new book containing eerie pictures of the mental hospitals of New England, could jolt us back into a time and place of horror and suffering. I wonder in another 50 years will our beliefs and practices seem as backward and psychotic?

lol a relative of mine was sent into Belmont (closed now I think) down in Waterford. Drank himself insane. Anyway, when he went mad altogether and was unmanageable he used to be strapped into a wooden chair with leather belts until he calmed down.

Yes, Lange understood that ‘madness’ was often caused by society and a toxic family. The other psychiatrist in the vid who was talking about patching up a patient so that the family would be happy with them was typical of psychiatry at the time. I don’t think they are any smarter now, they are just more cautious about being sued.

In Ireland we had Ivor Browne, who did great work, fair play to him.

Did you see ‘Behind the walls” RTE documentary?

Belmont Park in Waterford is mentioned MADDOG and a very evil man there, Dr Lane O’Kelly
