In a non religeous way one could say that by forgiving those that have infringed upon you, then you are taking away their power to control a piece of your mind. If I don't forgive the person who has wronged me in some way then I am thinking about them or the incident that caused me to feel this way at least some amount of time and in that way they are still infringing upon me. The choice is mine...forgive and get on with life or continue to harbour a grudge and allow them the satisfaction of knowing they are still affecting me.
