Okay, I don't quite understand this from the BBC report:
... the prosecution argued that the scientists were "just too reassuring"
What counts as too reassuring and who was reassured?
What was the convicted scientists remit in terms of their employment?
Was it their job to make decisions about evacuation, public announcements, or what?
If they made media announcements, did they have editorial control?
I'm confused.

I'd have given them life. Instead of giving warnings on the evidence they had, they told people to relax and have a glass of wine. These guys were 'Experts' but behaved as amateurs, resulting in multiple deaths.
