Workload and life's pressures have kept me from being able to keep fully abreast of all the current events going on, so I have a question regarding President Obama's healthcare reform plan. From what coverage I have seen, there seems to be quite a few that are against it. I am a bit puzzled (being a resident of Canada where we have medicare, and in the province in which I live, the small premiums I used to pay are now covered by the government) as to why there appears to be the backlash. Can someone clue me in? (because I really don't have the time to sit down with Time or Newsweek and try to figure it out).

Simple. Americans don't wish to have their taxes increased to thirty percent like us schmucks do just so they can stand in an hour long line up for a flu shot.

One reason we're opposed is because of the mandatory provision. Everyone has to opt in to the government plan or be fined (the Supreme Court idiotically called it a tax, when it's a penalty.) We are a freedom-loving bunch down here, and the idea of being forced to do something we don't want to do irritates the daylights out of us. We love choices, and with this plan, there really isn't a choice. Also, employers and employees will be soaked to the max in fees. It will cost us a lot more now for healthcare than it would if this stupid plan hadn't come along. Finally, no one understands this plan, not even the ones who voted it into law.

It might be better to do your own research because some people could have some bias in the interpretation of it.

True, and I will try if I can find the time, but then again, hearing "opinions" whether biased or not, allows a person to gain an understanding as to why it may have fallen into disfavour with certain people.

"Experience and the law of unintended consequences suggest the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" will neither protect patients nor make health services affordable. Actual caring will resemble that of the U.S. Postal Service. Services will be rationed and denied in arbitrary manner after long waiting, as in other countries with government health systems. Advocacy groups will institute something like a 'disease-of-the-month-club,' to apply political pressure to cover various conditions. In short, decisions which ought to be made by patients and physicians will instead be made by cold, distant bureaucracies. Switzerland has a market-based system which works. Care there is as good as in the US at 58% of the per capita cost. Such a system was not even considered here, because the goal is government control, not accessible, affordable or quality care."

It will result in long waits to see a doctor, large increases in costs, demoralized doctors and nurses, angry patients, and rationing. The government will dictate which services will be paid for and which will not (death panels). Old sick p...eople will become disposable. It is unclear whether those who might wish to pay for non-covered services with their own money, will be allowed to to so. Can you imagine that??? At least in other countries with socialized systems, one can go outside the system and pay for non-covered services. It is likely that we in the 'land of the free' will not be permitted to do so.

his ideal was to advance the ideas of building a productive, peaceful and caring society.

Because some set to win and some set to lose. Those set to lose are, generally, more articulate so you'll hear a lot from them.

My personal feeling is that universal healthcare does not require insurers and you can eradicate this private sector bureaucracy and improve healthcare for all - like we do. This is how Nationalised healthcare can prove to be more efficient.

However, you're not an island and you have huge cultural disparity which would make the system above far more difficult to implement than here in the UK.

I think you are right - however every country has a little bit of a different twist to how they implement the idea of health care - it will take a lot of effort and it will get very expensive at the beginning as greed and uncertainty sets in as they figure it out...

yet grin what do I know -- I am from Flori duh where we can't count our votes...

I hope you're right, where the state mingles with the private sector I panic and see a whole range of opportunity for corruption.

But, we actually seem to agree with each other here, which goes to show that miracles can & do happen.
