I have spent a good deal of time outdoors, often by myself where I have had some really awesome experiences/encounters in nature. I thought maybe to start a thread where outdoorsy people could share experiences.

Yesterday I went hiking in the snow in a local park and saw a beautiful flyover of geese - a huge flock (for this area anyway). And I was fairly well alone (most people in S. Ohio do not like snowlaugh ). As I was hiking I was thinking that the cold air felt so good against my face and it was just so great to be out there guessing all the wildlife tracks in the snow...very peaceful.

Anyone have any good wild life encounters or greats sunsets, views to share??teddybear

This is a great subject Felix but I'm not an outdoorsy person. I stay out of the sun because I have fair skin and I don't like it when it's hot. I used to like walking in the snow but due to knee and joint problems I can't do that anymore. But I will say when I took those walks I got a feeling of cleanliness especially if it was still snowing snowglobe

I was walking in a park in Los Gatos CA last week and notice a gopher had been making holes which is unusual in that park, then out of a tree came a big bird and he stuck his head in a hole and snatched out the gopher, it was a great blue heron. He flew away with his meal, yummy.

I'm one of those people who tolerate winter but I do enjoy going out to park areas to explore and take in the sights and sounds of nature. Being alone and feeling as one with nature is a feel good kinda thing and a great way to de-stress. hug

I live in an old house in a state forest. I love to walk the forest trails with my dog. Looking out my kitchen windows I often see deer, some come very close to the house, groundhogs, flocks of wild turkeys, foxes and many kinds of birds at my feeder,,, I love it,,,

Turtles are hatching right now in this part of the world. Last night I saw a Seagull drop a baby turtle onto the asphalt road and then swoop down to start eating it. I honked at the bird to stop it from pecking at or flying away with the little guy in its beak, picked up the young turtle and set it free in the ocean.

Awesome bird, the pileated woodpecker,, 20 or so inches. I've seen them here, not often. I can always tell when there's a Redtailed Hawk around, no birds come to the feeder. I also have a variety of Owls here, including the Great Horned Owl. Did you know they eat the little Screech Owls ?

Being the Outdoorsy type that I am last November my guy and I took a trip to Tennessee and one of the many places we visited was the Smoky Mountains National Park. Just down the road from the rest area we noticed a bunch of people parked and standing along side the road.

So we pulled over too and off to our left we saw a herd of male and female elks.It seems that two male elks had been fighting over the herd of females and were trying to get them over to the other side of that particular road. One of the males and females had tracking collars on.As we were pulling away we noticed a ranger opening up his truck of his car and held a horn in his hand blowing it to keep the elk from crossing the road.

That very same day we decided to drive over to Cherokee North Carolina and on the way back heading up the Smoky mountain road that winds up and down through the Smoky Mountains from the Cherokee Reservation we saw what appeared to be a wolf standing off to one side of the Smoky Mountain Road.We also could see that part of a creek was flowing backwards instead of upwards. We pulled off to the side and saw that that creek was flowing backwards instead of frontwards which was something funny to see.

Hopefully this coming Spring we'll be taking a trip down to Cade's Cove Tennessee.Couldn't go last year cause the bear activity was way to high.

that sounds awesome....there are quite a few great stories on here. My sister lives in Maine and went moose hunting at Baxter State Park there (more like a wildlife watching safari - no guns)

I have been to eastern KY to the Red River Gorge area - loved it! I spent the day at a State Park in the region called The Natural Bridge - very impressive - it's a huge sandstone arch that is just sitting there in the middle of the woods at the top of a hill....like god dropped his horseshoe....anyway, I climbed down the mountain into the laurel swamp and had a life sighting for a Swainson's Warbler - spent an hour in the bottoms reading, watching to make sure I was right. It was smart to rest - the clilmb back up was much steeper than what it had seemed on the way down...I literally had to climb the last 1/2 mile or so, grabbing onto branches - glad I had proper footwear and my biking gloves....beautiful day!

I love the pileated - I was hiking off trail one day and happened upon nestlings - the nests are obvious as belonging to the pileated and the nestlings large enough to tell what they were...never told a soul....I am sure if I had birders would have driven out of the nest with their curiousity....birds that young need to be fed constantly but if humans are nearby they will sometimes dive bomb and sometimes stay away from the nest. Either way, it interrupts feeding the nestlings.

Yes the great horneds are raptors, predators. Raptors will eat smaller birds so that would not surprise me in the least...though in the pellets we usually find what look like field mice bones.....really there are so many fragments it's hard to tell what they all are....I had one friend who was very adept at identifying this tho

yes we have a few eagles (baldies) here not so many goldens - we will get goldens at lake erie sometimes - I have enjoyed several encounters with bald eagles- young ones grappling & playing in mid air just above my head in the wild, and also mating pairs having a "chase" - more recently accidentally "happened" upon a nest - couldn't figure out why the pair was letting me get so close, then I saw the nest - hadn't realized it at first - great encounter - lucky I wasn't dive bombed. I left a frantic voice mail on my son's phone - "OMG OMG you should be here - you should see this..."

the first time I saw a baldie in the wild, tears came to my eyes. I had never dreamed that I would have that chance and soem very special friends made sure it happened for meteddybear
