Tickets can be very expensive.
But than at least don't say that you ARE coming.
I can understand that in an enthousiastic mood you say you want to come, bit seeing how much its actually going to cost, the enthousiasme is quickly gone.
Paying a few 1000 € for tickets is no exception.

Good idea! Or at least shows you his plane ticket on the webcam! I went to Mexico to meet someone a few years ago. I was very nervous that she would not be there when I got there! She was, and we got along fine, sad that things didn't work for us in the end. She is now Married though and I am very happy for her!

One said he would come visit, but got cold feet and told me a couple of days before he was supposed to show up.
Personally, I don't believe anything unless I see the ticket on the camera with the dates, times, etc.
To promise and then not show is cowardly. No respect for such people. There is no excuse for such bad behavior.
