You can find this helpful advice listed, even now, in CS's Help directory:

"IM:

What do I need in order to use the IM?
•Have Flash installed. You must have Flash Version 9 (or latest version)!
•Have Javascript enabled
•Have popups for this site enabled.
•Read and follow the rules below
See section on IM/Chat Problems for more information

How do I chat privately with another member?
There are several ways to do this:
1.You can click the green "IM Me" button while viewing a member's profile. This will popup an IM window where you can chat with the member. (The green IM button appears only when a member is online).

...

I would like to see who is IMing me before I accept
If you have popups enabled for this site, you will see who is IMing you. click here for how to enable popups.

With popups enabled, the IM window will popup with the member's username, age, location, and photo. You will then have the option to: 1) accept their invitation and start chatting; 2) decline their invitation and type 'no thanks'; 3) To refuse the IM by simply closing the IM window.

I am trying to IM a member, but they are not answering?
1.Make sure to type a message and press "send" button. The IM doesn't load on their end until you type and SEND the first message.
2.Be patient. It may take a minute for the IM to popup on their screen.
3.They may have recently logged off and are no longer on the site to receive your IM.
4.They may not have a browser that will work with the IM.
5.They may simply not have time, or they may not want to chat at this time.
6.They may already be IMing with someone right now.
7.Members have the right to refuse any request for IM. Don't react rudely. Don't keep IMing them. If they don't want to IM, it will only irritate them. Find someone else to IM with or visit the chatrooms or forums.
8.You can try again later, or send them an email."
