Dengue Fever ( Archived) (6)

Mosquito season is about to start in the Northern Hemisphere and this year we have a new threat to worry about, Dengue Fever. As if Lyme disease isn't enough to worry about from those nasty little ticks and West Nile virus now this.
Anyway, Now is the time to check around the outside for anything that holds water especially dog bowls and rain barrels that don't have a screen on them because while you may not want to actively wage war on mosquitoes, you may be contributing to the problem by providing them with a place to breed. If you have an outside dog bowl for water, dump it out at least once a day. Your dog will be happy too to have fresh water to drink and any mosquito eggs that may be in the water will never survive out of water. Come on, you wouldn't want your dog taking a crap in your neighbors doorway, be a responsible dog owner and don't add to the mosquito population.

My neighbor had a big cooler outside with six pockets in the lid to hold drink cups. They had a BBQ and left the cooler outside where it got rained on. Those little pockets filled up with water. About a week later I was outside doing who knows what and took a look at the cooler and every one of those water filled pockets had about 10 larvae wiggling around. I opened the lid which dumped the water onto the ground and killed about 60 mosquitoes in about 2 seconds. Sure was more efficient than swatting them on your arm while they are drinking your blood. Here's a related story I "dug up".
