25 April 2013 marks the 24th birthday of the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima who was taken into Chinese custody on 17 May 1995 at age six. He has not been seen in public ever since.

After several months of fruitless effort to communicate with Chadrel Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama announced on May 14, 1995, that the eleventh reincarnation of the Panchen Lama had been found.

Within three days, Chadrel Rinpoche disappeared along with around 30 colleagues involved in the reincarnation search. They were subjected to beatings and other torture during interrogation, and Chadrel Rinpoche was later sentenced to six years imprisonment for ‘leaking state secrets’ and ‘splitting the country.’

the 11th Panchen Lama’s birthday, we are keenly aware of how his experience connects to the rigid ongoing controls that continue in Tibet and the circumstances of daily life that are provoking the self-immolations protests. If we merely look narrowly at the area of religion in Tibet, we can see that Chinese policies have led to executions, torture, imprisonment, destruction of religious institutions, political indoctrination, expulsion of monks and nuns from monasteries and nunneries, the banning of religious ceremonies, restrictions on the numbers of monks in monasteries, and the extreme disruption of the religions practices of average Tibetans.

The demand for building material and inputs to manufacturing generate demand for iron ore. Although China is one of the world's largest producers of iron ore, its own sources are not sufficient to economically supply its huge iron smelting industry, so it must supplement its domestic supplies with imports. As it accounts for around half of the world's pig iron production3, China needs around 60 per cent of the global seaborne supply of iron ore. Australia is the largest exporter of iron ore to China, providing over 45 per cent of Chinese imports.

Australia's management of ADS is considered 'best practice' by the China National Tourism Administration, and we have received nearly 830,000 tourists under the ADS scheme as at June 2012.

There has been a further significant increase in the number of Chinese students coming to Australia over the past decade. In 2011-12, Australia granted just under 50,000 student visas to Chinese citizens

one of the first Chinese investments in Australia occurred some 25 years ago, when the China Metallurgical Import and Export Corporation (now known as Sinosteel) acquired a 40 per cent interest in a joint venture with Hamersley Iron (now part of Rio Tinto) to develop the Channar iron ore mine in the Pilbara. Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) will import 2,500 units of short sea ship from China aiming to improve the logistics and distribution performance among ports scattered throughout the archipelago, an Indonesia official said here Monday.

Natsir Mansyur, Vice Chairman of Kadin's Trade, Distribution and Logistics division said Kadin has signed the agreement with China and the total of 2,500 units ship worth 5 billion US dollars will be delivered gradually within 5 years starting 2013.
