I realize you're a stickler for semantics. So a reporter refers to an assault rifle which in the mind of the public is a military style weapon with a big magazine, that will fire lots of bullets in a very short time without having to stop to reload. The public, for the most part doesn't know the diff between fully and semi automatic. Does it matter? No!
As you know there are 48 contiguous states with 48 different gun laws and no borders in fact as you also know, CA is right next to AZ which has probably the most lax gun laws in the country. Then there's the internet.
