and before you all send me links to free samples of Tena ladies - I mean my mixer tap sounds like bloody Chinese water torture. And it's getting worse.
Do mixer taps work like those old 80's school taps (last time I changed a tap washer was circa 1989) - is it just a washer in there needs replacing? Or do I do my bit for the local economy and ring a plumber (except they're probably all in Oz).

You mean constant dripping? That must be driving you nuts. The only suggestion I can make is put a t-towel under it to dull the sound and get yourself soome guy with a tool belt. I belive GS has one of those...I dont know if he can fix the drip though laugh Maybe he can hit it with his belt

Tis gone from dripping to a constant torrent, so it seems. Your towel idea is pretty good - the relative silence is bliss - as long as I don't end up flooding the kitchen ....
Think I'll switch water off in morning and remove taps then probably shamefaced call plumber tomorrow afternoon when have to replace taps and washers .... now where are the vice grips ....

Its worth giving it a go yourself. Whats the worst that can happen? Do you live in a limey area? perhaps theres build up preventin the water from locking off when its supposed to....I guessing obviously laugh

If it's dripping it's the rubber washer, no idea what they are making them these days but they don't seem to last as long as they did years ago.

The modern taps work on the same principle as the old ones you wont need to call a plumber.

Thanks. I'll give it a go. It's weird though - at 18 I'd have ripped the kitchen apart and flooded the place if I got it wrong , is it older and wiser or just more lazy and let someone else deal with it?

Lazy if you are sure you can do the job yourself, wiser if your going to flood the place :)

Remember to switch off both the hot and cold water before messing around with the tap.

If the tap is old it may be a sod to dismantle so be prepared for a lot of sweat and pain to get it apart.

Also if the tap has been leaking for some time there can actually be wear in the inside of the tap as the dripping water has eroded away the internal brass. If that is the case you can by a thing call a tap seat repair tool which smooths the inside of the tap back to its proper smoothness. It can take some time to do this though. Or you can get plastic inserts to put in some taps which is easier. However in the worse case senario you may need a new tap
