Yes, if it wouldn't be superior, I would not bother to use Ubuntu. But don't expect to understand everything quickly nor to not run across bugs. I even run my Windows apps on Linux perfectly. Try the live cd demo and different desktops (kde, gnome etc. with the synaptic package manager) and see it you like it before installing.

derda: Complete nonsense. I use it for years and boot other os only to recompile stuff. Even a 14y. old can work on Linux after 2 weeks without problems. Bugs, sure there are enough, but have always a fix by simple googling for a minute.

What kind of teacher? For children on how to use word? I had to take a word course back in 98 and it was the dumbest course that I've ever taken. 90% of word's functions are useless and we got a 1000 page homebrewed manual by the instructor.- I'd have been much better with a little booklet...but I got the course payed. We got to know later that our teacher was a unemployed car mechanic...

Such condescension, I assume you practice every day!!!

No, I didn't teach children, I taught qualified Computer Engineers, but sometimes I came across twats who thought they knew it all, I just ignored them and they soon fell by the wayside. As the saying goes " a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing".

A piece of genuine advice, if you speak and act nicely, those around you will mostly do the same, if you act like a jerk, you will soon be left alone.beer

I'm very glad to see this thread. purple heart

I've been using different flavours of GNU/Linux for more than eight years. I actually bought my first Linux distribution, which was Xandros. I had so many problems with Windows XP at that time. Viruses, trojans and spyware.
But after Xandros I discovered Ubuntu, Debian and also tried Fedore for a while. Even Open Solaris made it into my laptop, which I had a lot of hope for before Larry Ellison and his Oracle destroyed it.
Then back to Ubuntu again and a quick visit to Fedora, but problems with dependencies (also known as dependency hell), made me try Linux Mint. Since version 12 I've sticked to Mint MATE, which is a pure joy to use.
Now I'm on version 16 and because of the new kernel I can use proprietary drives from AMD. That means that my CPU doesn't have to work so hard with graphics.

For Windows fans, I just have to say, time will tell....

CmdrMercutio: mate of mine needed to print some stuff urgently and managed to collect a big HP printer free on Freecycle. He rang me tonight as he had to have the print jobs done tomorrow and couldnt make it work as the driver download wouldnt install properly

I took my old Netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 (pretty old - havent even used this computer in over a year) to his place. we installed dropbox on his PC, copied all his printable files into it, shared the folder with me as my netbook had Dropbox already, and the files copied across. plugged in his printer, Linux auto-configured it and i printed the files all off.

Linux for the win, I think

awesome.. he couldn't email the files I guesss...I mean they must ahve been too large.

I liked linux for any kind of document preparation and any thing web based...but give me MS for media aps. I dont' write on the aps tho so linux loses me there
