Halv0: I do not agree. Happiness is dependent on many factors. People need to have their basic needs met and then they can be happy. Basic needs include food, water, shelter, socialisation, acceptance.
Without these things, there is no real and true happiness. We can pretend to be happy, but it is no more than a pretense.
True happiness can only be when our basic needs are met. Then we can be content. Happiness is not something we will in the mind, it is something we are, or are not. Happiness is a state of being, not a perception.
jmo.

I'm sorry Halv, I'll disagree up to a point with you. Because even the definition of basic needs differ in each individual and/or culture. For instance, the indigenous people of the Amazon, are happy with their definition of shelter, socialization, etc. Personally, as a westerner, I wouldn't be happy under those conditions, although practically my basic needs would have been covered. Another example is a case I get to know recently - a 50 yo man married to a 23 yo woman who is pregnant to their first child, leaving in a 300+ sqm house with a swimming pool, etc. but she left him with the excuse "how do you expect me to be happy knowing that I'll have to raise our child in that small old house", making it clear to him that unless she get a bigger house plus a few more extra benefits, she wouldn't go back to him...
So, my conclusion is that some people cannot be happy (or if you prefer, content) with anything, and some can be happy with almost nothing. With this in mind, I tend to believe that happiness is based on our perception of how things should be... However, I don't believe in complete happiness. Only to happy moments. If I have one good/joyful/happy moment everyday, I consider myself lucky...
cheers

Happiness is fleeting and momentary.....like a drug we crave it but are soon looking for another, stronger high. Contentment is what we should be striving for.
