Nobody forces anyone to smoke or take drugs but the promotion of such things would be wrong. So why do we let this company take over a day in the calendar of our country to promote its product which is harmful?

Ah sure we'll ban Electric Picnic too. The drinking, drug taking and general debauchery that goes on there is only shocking. And they'd have no excuse to partake in any of those activities if it wasn't on. thumbs up

What single products is the electric picnic promoting? Plus they do their own clean up, it's in the middle of no where, pay for their own security and pay for a licence to hold the event. So no comparison really.

OK we all know its a cover up to boost sales of the black stuff had to laugh there about the CEO of Diageo spending a night in AE not likely he made 6 million from shares he sold a little while back so Mr Walsh is having a good oul laugh at Arthurs day ,they might be better of sending our health minister Mr James Reilly to AE FOR THE NIGHT to see how the overworked junior doctors and nurses cope tonight with all the cut backs in our health system ,you can blame this that and the cat but until the irish attitude and mentality towards drink changes we are going to have serious problems in our health system and prision system fueled by our passion for alcohol and the Black Stuff beer

So what if its not a product being promoted? It will cost us in the hospitals which is a reason you're against Arthurs Day?

Each venue has it's own licence and takes a large portion of the profit. It is not a Guinness benefit day financially compared to their turnover. The benefit derived by Guinness is the publicity.

But on that point the GAA promoted a single product last Sunday. Sure it was a football match but the result was 50,000 sore heads, a cleanup of north inner city Dublin, extra policing etc. I guess that should go as well?

We have a huge problem with alcohol in this country and most of it is behind closed doors. Bottle of wine a night or 6 cans a night people....Liver disease epidemic is a ticking time bomb.

Is your issue with the cost of the events or about the attitude to drink in this country?

im not anti drink but hospitals now and the violence associated with drink is spiralling out of control in this country and something serious needs to be implemented to address the issues thumbs up

The electric picnic and other gigs must have medical staff on hand that they pay for! Very few have to go to hospital. They also have their own security, clean up after themselves. It doesn't compare and if it did doctors would tell us.

The men in the know who work in A&E say Arthurs Day is a huge problem whether you like it or not. They are at the coalface so I will take their word rather than yours thanks.laugh

Both. But if Diago paid for it themselves I would have no objection if stupid people fell for it.

Well it should start with kids when they start school at 5 or 4. They should educate them non stop on the effects of alcohol on society, the body and life in general. We have cut smoking with similar campaigns.

Also I don't think parents should drink in front of young kids but of course this could never be a law.

I don't think you'll find me anywhere in this thread saying that the public hospitals are not very busy dealing with the public who of their own free will went out and got wasted...

I think we've agreed nobody is fooled by the motive behind the day, nobody argues about the social cost of drugs such as alcohol. The only thing I won't agree on is the targeting of one event which in the overall scheme of things is relatively inconsequential..
