TallB and I live in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District. We both voted for the Democrat, Keith Ellison for the US house which he won. Being a Muslim he's opted to use the Muslim holy book, the Koran, for his swearing-in cermony. This has caused agitated conservative right wing politicians and bloggers to complain that he's undermining American civilization. Their claim is that it's Congress that decides which book should be used for swearing-in and not individuals.

What's your opinion? Should people be allowed to use a holy book of their own choice or should it be dictated by the "prevailing" culture. What does it say about the separation of church and state?

Makes sense to me..

He swore on HIS religion's bible.

If he had sworn on a Christian bible, his words would be not his oath.

I had never thought of it like that before. I guess it would make more sense to swear on the holy book that they believe in. If it were going to really matter. Or should I say, if it were to guarantee the truth be told.
But, people lied on the Holy Bible everyday in courts. So, does it really matter??

If the Koran strenthens their resolve or adds to the seriousness of how they veiw their oath of office I think it would be better. If the Bible is less revelant to them than the Koran then it would be meaningless for them to swear or affirm on. I think the main thing the American on the street wants is someone they can believe in. It is their affirmation that is in question and not their religious affiliation. The belief should be about believing in them as a person who has a strong conviction no matter what that belief is based on.

Are any polition's oath credible? He could swear on a cow pat, and the right wings would have a fit. They need somthing to cry about to keep their talk shows going. A christian congress has been shown to be corrupt, so what makes anyone think I'm gonna trust congress reguardless of faith. They are all crooked.

In general and not really related to the US congress, i think people should be allowed to do what they want as far as there beliefs system goes.
Forcing a religion on someone is wrong IMO. Its called freedom and being able to believe in what you want too not what others tell you to.

My 2 cents for what it is worth, Keith Ellison should use the Muslim holy book, the Koran, for his swearing-in ceremony. He is less likely to break an oath that is done on a holy book he believes in then on one he doesn't believe in. peace

Is he not in our country where the bible is and has been the basis for our laws and morality template? He needs to swear in just like everyone else. If he needs his own ceremony using his bible or beliefs so be it...but lets not change the wheel every time someone involves themselves and then pulls their hands back when their religious whims are not supported by the majority - this could go on and on.

It doesn't seem to matter what book they swear on...Some of the people that swear on the bible are the biggest crooks of all. A persons word should suffice for any swearing in cerimonies.

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all variations of the same religion. All believe in the same One God, Genesis, and that Adam was the first man. All have nearly the same line of prophets, including Abraham, Moses, and Noah, but the difference is Islam believes Jesus Christ (pbuh) and Muhammad (pbuh) are the last two prophets of God. In the Old Testament, New Testament, and the Final Testament - the Koran, the first commandment is “worship no gods but God, and equate no statues, idols or pictures with God.” “Islam” is derived from the Arabic root word which means peace and submission, much like Prophet Jesus' call to peace and submissiveness. There are 99 names in Arabic for the One God, with “Allah” (Al-One & llah-God) being the most common. “Allah” is also the name Arab Christians have for God from pre-Islamic times up till today, and is the name for God used in the Arab Bible. The word “Alah,” is the Aramaic word (language spoken by Jesus Christ) for God, and the related “Eloh” is the Hebrew word for God, in addition to the Heberw YHVH.

It really doesn't matter.laugh

(Koran 5:46)“We sent Jesus, son of Maryam (Mary), confirming the Torah that had come before him, and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirmation of the Torah that had come before it.”

(Koran 29:46) And dispute ye not With the People of the Book Except with means better than mere disputation unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong and injury. Say: ‘We believe in that which is revealed to us and which was revealed to you. Our God and your God is one. To him we surrender ourselves.’

(Koran 21:92) Your religion is but one religion, and I am but Your only Lord. Therefore serve Me. Men have divided themselves into factions, but to Us they shall return

They can swear on bibles, comics, korans or even a Judas Priest CD, but the fact remains most can't be trusted with kids, or animals for that matter.

RainbowSlider,

I have said this before and I will say it again: You're the wisest amongst us. In one paragraph you've summed up 2000 years of religious development.

Undermining american civilization? Being allowed to choose any holy book for a swearing-in ceremony should be a GIVEN in the american civilization, it would be UNDERLINING what many of you claim to be the foundation of american civilization. A freedom worth going to war for...?

IF (big IF) a holy book has any place in your Congress - or any governmental institution anywhere for that matter - it should be one that carries a meaning for the individual that takes the oath. But what should non-religious members of Congress swear on? Or are they not welcome?

Thanks, Plarkin. I think we all can have differences of opinion. Whenever I think of how radical opinions can cause civil unrest I keep seeing that scene from the, "Planets of the Apes" where they were worshipping the bomb as the great peacemaker. There were the apes who were smarter than some of the humans because of the evolution after the great holocausts. Charlton Heston is thrown into the future and sees the statue of liberty buried up to its head. Then I believe it was George Orwell's voice talking about what once was a great planet as the planet is blown up by the last remaining intellectual humans with the great minds. I don't think total annilation is the answer.

That's what I was thinking.

Personally I think the whole superstitious practice of swearing in on holy books is absurd. Especially considering that there is supposed to be a separation of church and state. Why should the government ask people to swear in on religious documents?

Just asking them to raise their right hand and swear in as an individual should be fine. If the person is religious that's their business.

Liars will lie no matter where their hands are. In either case we're just going by the person's oath as a human being. The government should do away with any religious symbols or documents altogether. What's the government got to do with religion?

The whole system is hypocritical. It was a religious fanatic that got "In God We Trust" printed on all our money. Why should the government care whether someone believes in a god or not? Many humanitarians who do not believe in a god are more humane than many religious hypocrites anyway. Just because a person claims to be affiliated with a religion doesn't mean a damn thing.

I'm a firm believer in the separation of church and state, and so why the government is even requiring that people swear in on religious doctrines totally eludes me. How is that a separation of church and state? Just swearing in as a human being should be all that's required because, in the end, that's really all anyone is really doing anyway.

Shouldn't that apply to courtrooms, too, James? I mean you already have the innocent until proven guilty clause for the states. We don't how a person will do until they have done their term in office. Don't we judge someone on their past behaviors?
