2intrigued: My ex left in 1985 and divorce proceedings took place after the one year mandatory waiting period. We mutually agreed that divorce would give us closure so we could move on freely towards the next chapter in our lives.

You have to be living apart 4 years out of the preceding 5 to apply for a divorce here, it is also still a relatively new thing.
Lots of people here are years into second relationships with no divorce.

In my case, one year separated was enough time to consider whether there was a chance to save the marriage and due to the nature of our parting of ways, there was no saving to be had. After the one year was up, we got an uncontested divorce, although it took many years to heal after the divorce. Healing for me was discovering that not all men are verbally abusive. Getting the divorce papers simply put a sense of closure on it so I could move forward.

I wonder if these may be some reasons why some people separate and not divorce right away.
Although a legal separation and divorce have many things in common there are some advantages to separating rather than a divorcing. Those advantages include:
It allows couples time apart, away from the conflict of the marriage to decide if divorce is what they truly want.
It allows for the retention of medical benefits and certain other benefits that divorce would bring to an end.
If your religious beliefs conflict with the idea of divorce, you are able to live separately and retain your marital status for religious beliefs.
If you are a military spouse, you may wish to remain married for 10 years so that you can take advantage of benefits set up by the Uniformed Services Former Spouse Protection Act.
Remaining married for 10 years or more also means being able to take advantage of certain social security benefits for a spouse.

It is said that patience is a virtue but it becomes a problem when too many years go by...at least it does for me. No grab and go that's for sure.
