I thought that was a hare at first, then I saw the ears.
When I worked on Sydney Airport in the 70s, there were a lot of hares about.
And I remember one time going to my uncle's farm in the very late 60s. Mum was driving and we had just pulled off the main highway at dusk. Mum got my brother to get the rifle out just in case. 2 minutes up the road and spotted a rabbit. My brother, being right-handed and shooting out of the passenger side, muffed his first shot and the rabbit jumped about 10' in the air (yeah, I was a bit young then, maybe slightly less) and kept running up the road. Next shot got it.
So the rest of the 30 minute drive (Mum was not a slowcoach, just the trip takes that long), every rabbit we saw looked too small to shoot. Finally arrived at my uncle's. Told him we had only got one as the rest were too small. Took the rabbit out of the boot and he laughed. It was a hare.
Obvious then why they looked so small. The Wabbit God must have been out that night.
