What prompted this question was a recent concert by the Great B B King. At age 88, still going, but sadly delivering a terrible performance at a recent concert. We have the recordings of these artists at their peak, which they will be remembered for eons. Do you really want to Black Sabbath today?
Im sure they feel it too when a performance is not going right and I would imagine that it would be one of the hardest decisions for them to give up one of the few things that they have only ever known how to do, but I guess in time they will.
However the irony is, that as a fan occasionally you will remember an artist and think to yourself "I wish I could have seen them just one more time" and in your heart and mind you would take that concert good, bad or otherwise and enjoy it unreservedly.

Good point, I had tickets to see Chris LeDoux and work made it to where I could not attend. I figured I could catch his next tour. So sadly he died before his next tour and I to this day kick myself for not calling off sick and seeing one of my favorites. So old or maybe not so great if they come though my area I go. Once they are gone like that they are gone for good...
I wonder if Ozzy is going to retire, come back or retire again? or is he retired? or coming back?

You say that about Black Sabbath, but I'm seeing them later this year. Assuming they've not popped their clogs by then.

I'm not so sure, I remember my parents, who adored Frank Sinatra...went to his last performance at Sun City. It was terrible and disappointed them so much. Sometimes it's better to just keep the memories what they are...memories
I think there is a time to truly retire from the limelight - it has been done a lot in movies but the senior artist brings a new person onto the stage and lets the lights shine on a new talent.
Its gracious - "there is a time under the sun for everything"
