Conrad73: yes,pretty sad!
Safety is way insufficient in those Mines!

Recently I went to some grottos and I felt vulnerable just looking up to the rocks and thinking: what if one of this rocks decides to go down???The same when I have been inside some underground mines.

With all the safeties of the world not-mine is safe Conrad especially if this is under the ground. Perhaps, it is time to use robots for all those dangerous chores.

Roofs can fall also. Even a big stone can fall from a mountain over a road.

But coal mines always had the problem of fire, and it's not easy to exit.

Communication with the underground mine workers is crucial and there are not many mines that have it. It is expensive to develop and implement a communication system underground. I hear once someone here presenting an estimate cost to a Mine Company to develop their own underground communication system at all conditions and they preferred not to invest in it at this moment.

How much is a life worth to invest?

A good underground communication system do improves the workers safety and their own productivity!

The compensation they will have to pay to the killed miners' families is going to be more expensive that having a better-safer place for the miners to work and the sadness of the families losing their beloved miners will never go away.

The estimate cost for the Underground communication system was about 150,000 US dollar.

Could an underground communication system had avoided this accident or had minimized the damages?

Perhaps.

I think that wasn't the cause. Methane bursts happens suddenly.

But it's hard to know, because the turkish government has a personal interest in avoid investigations.

Not even the Mine executives and the Turkish officials know -or do not want to tell- the cause of the fire but they are holding on: ""there was not negligence"". A few executives have been arrested and they might be the scapegoats.

There is one diagram of the mine where the emergency Oxygen supply can reach –aparently- one level of the mine but not the deepest one. Then how are the mine’s executives-owners prepared for accidents???

Again profit is the only reason they do the mining and the Turkish government is supporting the owners of the mine, why ?? $$$

“The Soma Kömür Isletmeciligi company started out in 1984 by extracting coal in Geventepe on a "rödovans" licence basis. The company increased its production from an annual 150,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes. The founder of the company and CEO geological engineer, Alp Gürman, told Hürriyet 2 years ago the following: "The Türkiye Kömür Isletmeleri (Turkish Coal Corporation) (TKI) was extracting coal for 130-140 dollars. We presented a tender that pledged to extract coal at a cost of 23.80 dollars, including a 15% licence share for the TKI. Both ourselves and other private companies would not get involved in this business if we didn't make a profit. Our engineers and workers did not come from outer space. It is just a matter of good planning and the introduction of private sector work practices."

While Gürman did not mention what cuts had been made to reduce the cost of extracting coal to $23.80, mining unions have constantly stressed in their reports that cuts in the mining sector lead to fatalities……”

I just hope the Turkish people will not let this crime to go unpunished.
