peachmelba: why should the British government be there tho,?im sure it's pressure on their resources.if it was not possible and circumstances meant that 6 counties would never be governed by Dublin,a sovereign state could be proposed I'm sure if everyone got together working in their communities to build a better relationship for all this could be achieved,..and I'm sure if this happend we as a nation would give them support to start them off.
I agree it's a drain on resources of UK but who's in best position to maintain Northern Ireland .

I think it's an over romanticised idea of having a 'United Ireland'

Anyhow , enjoy your eve handshake

..well if it was to become sovereign then they share power themselves and aided by England and Ireland to start them off,..I'm sure they would make it happen for themselves if this was to happen in the future, anyway have a nice evening.wine

As an Englishman in Ireland, and a very happy Englishman in your fine beautiful but occasionally wet country. Can i just say that every English member of my immediate and wider family, and my many English friends living in England have no desire or wish to hold on to, occupy or spend money on an part of Ireland, wether it is called Northern Ireland, Ulster , The Six Counties or whatever popular name is in vogue these days. If we could sign on the dotted line and re-unite Ireland tomorrow we would and i would be the first
in the queue. But at the end of the day we live in a democracy be it in England, Ireland or anywhere else in the civilised world where one has the right to vote. And, therefore if the majority in the north wish to remain part of the UK then you have to respect that. Same too if the majority wish to be united with the republic. My own personal opinion is for an united Ireland the same way as i support independence for Scotland. But if it never happens in either situation and no one dies from bullets or bombs, then be happy with that and let peace prevail over hatred, dogma and secterianism. Peace & Love to y'all : )

I wonder was it a Moderator tool. Where his actual comment is visible only to the Administrators. conversing

On a separate note I notice a regular sparring partner of yours has vanished.

bettybj: In reply to your question about having lived in the north, think it's pretty obvious I have or otherwise I'd look pretty silly asking the question of others.

My two bits are simple most people are not ready to have an united Ireland or to be thrown out on their own if England decided tomorrow to cut all ties.
Yeah there are lots that agree one way or other but getting everyone to agree to come together and agree on one thing is almost impossible.

For a long time I said if you could just rip NI off and let them fight it out themselves so be it. Now I know it would just be a blood bath between the dividing sides and the people that don't care would would loose out.

To me and I'm no expert on this by any means there is no simple solution.

Maybe I'm talking out of my hat but it's my thoughts.

bettbj: It's up to each and every person living in the 6 counties or Northern Ireland{/s] how to proceed or when to do so if that's how it goes.

Whats so wrong with Irish people deciding whats best for Irish people?

Lets look at fact betty. Who created the mess in Ireland? The Irish or someone else? Was it 'THEM' it deffo wasn't 'US'

Do you have a partitionist mind set? Do you agree with the squiggly line that seperates Ireland? I'm from Belfast betty in your head to do think of me as 'US' or a 'THEM'... I see myself as IRISH.
