Yes, I am Southern born and Southern bred. Love this state with its mountains, lakes and sandy beaches. Have you ever visited this state? What did you like or not like about it? What is special about where you live? I need some new ideas for places to visit. Talk me into it!

Utto, there must be a lot of Yankees on this site today. No responses! What type of bait must I dangle in order to get anyone to take a bite on this subject?

Hmmmmm. I just might have to make plans to visit. Sounds nice. And, I'll bet the accents are quite different, too. Love to hear different dialects and accents. Sights, sounds and smells of a place never visited!

Don't know about Miss Mel. Hopefully, she found her Prince Charming.

Lake, my dad was born in Hamilton. My grandfather preached at Vina. I went to school at Red Bay. My four living aunts still live in Hamilton. I like going to Red Bay in the six grade. The school had been burnt down the yesr before so we went to school in the Baptist church. The whole class got together and bought a bar of soap for me. Grandma had no tub to wash in so I learned to use one of them large white pans to wash in. I learned to bath in the spring but the water was like ice. Grandpa died when I was two and grandma got remarried. Grandpa's house was the old train depot but it was gone when I was a child and the traintracks were gone. Mom took us to tent revivals in Fort Payne. I road the greyhound buses in Alabama. Dad knew every boot legger in Northern Alabama and ran shine for grandpa's still. Grandpa was a preacher and ran a still and dad had a hollow
false bottom place on log truck to give out the shine. Dad taught me how to make wine. Dad buried a gallon of shine under my step grandfather's outside window in 1960 and dug it up in 1970. It was some potent shine but I had to use sugar and water to try it.

Hello Alabama,

We Canucks would say you're the one with the accent!LOL
I live in Ottawa, our nations capital. We have the worlds longest skating rink, our Parliament buildings, the Gatineau Hills (part of the Appalachian Mountain chain), whitewater rafting, green space galore (but not exactly as picturesque as lovely Vancouver Is.) and a fantastic tour guide named James

Roy,

I never know when you are serious or when you are just poking fun. I remember coming home from a date one evening and smelling booze in the air. My date asked if my Daddy had thrown a drunk. We found out later that the revenoors (Spell?) had blown up a still on some land behind our house. We never knew it was there until it wasn't.

For me, Alabama is a warm and friendly place (not because everyone stays drunk). If people bump into you on the street, they turn and say "Excuse me", then end up talking to you like you were an old friend.

I love to visit other places, but I always come home. Maybe you should, too.

Bobbie

Lake,
I will visit my aunts again but I don't know when. I like it in Arkansas. My mother was born at Wynne. I have been over most of America and every free country in Europe before I was 7. I was born in Frankfurt, Germany and went to school at Karlsruhe, Germany. I liked Germany especially them ice bon snitzels.

I've been to Alabama a couple times. My youngest brother lived near Montgomery for several years. I went down there with my parents one year to visit during christmas vacation. While there it was almost like being home. The temps during the day were in the mid 20's and we also did some deer hunting. Instead of using a rifle I decided to use a camera for a change. I was surprised by the size of the anthills I saw and I even got pictures of armidillo's in the wild.
The next time I went was to help my brother move back to NH and it was HOT.

Raynew,

Yes, we do have a wide fluctuation in temperatures here. Today, it is in the low 90's. Not much of a breeze. Thunderstoms expected later in the day. I like the wide range in temperatures, but summer is my favorite season. I don't like the cold.

I can still remember when I was in Red Bay going to the Piggly Wiggly. My oldest aunt wanted me to live with in Hamilton and my second oldest aunt showed my grandmother's grave in Hamilton. I can still remember my grandmother having me get a switch and I got a small one. lol. I rememeber working for Buddy's Sausage house in Red Bay. I worked with many prisoners and everyone had knives. "Ride that hide white boy, lol." We had to save the leather and the meat to. I can remember the red clay that got on everything and watching my granny boiling our clothes in black kettle. I can remember dad had made muscadine wine in it before she did. I can remember all the pretty purple cloths that used to be white. :)

LOL! We never had to do washing in a pot, but....red mud abounds. When my son played little league, it was always a challenge to keep the white part of the uniform white. Between the red mud and the grass stains, I used a lot of Shout.....and not all of it came from a spray bottle. (Out, damn spot!)

I decided to revive this thread because I need some new ideas for next year's vacation. Please let me know about where you live and why it would be a good place to vacation. For those of you who don't know me, I am a roller coaster nut and would travel on foot to ride a good one. I also enjoy going to the white sandy beaches of the Gulf. At this point in my life, I am ready to venture out and see new places...do new things. Any suggestions?

I would love to visit the southern States. Up here in Manitoba we have beautiful lakes, prairies, wild life, hot summers and cold winters. Friendly, small, towns that each have their own summer festivals. We have outdoor music festivals like Country Fest and Folk Fest as well as Folklarama(a festival that celebrates different cultures). Really we have too much to even mention. Oh yes, we have polar bears if you want to travel even further north.

I feel like a tourism promoter but I do love and appreciate where I live!

I have never been to any part of Canada. You make it sound very inviting. I will have to do some research and make plans to see parts of the country.

wave GOOD MORNING BOBBIE. MY NAME IS KATHY. I AM OKIE BRED AND OKIE BORN. I WAS IN ALABAMA ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. MY GRANDMA, MOTHERS SIDE, HAILS FROM ALABAMA. (DON'T YOU JUST LOVE THE SONG?) ANYWAY,MY MOM AND I WENT THROUGH THERE ON OUR WAY TO GEORGIA TO SEE MY YOUNGEST SON GRADUATE FROM BOOT CAMP. I LOVE ALABAMA. IT SO REMINDS ME OF OKLAHOMA, LANDSCAPE WISE. ONLY I THINK YOUR TREES ARE A LITTLE TALLER. MY MOM AND I HAD MADE THE COMMENT THAT THE PEOPLE THERE WERE FRIENDLY CAUSE THEY WAVED WHEN WE PASSED EACH OTHER A LOT.
OKLAHOMA IS A BEAUTIFUL STATE WITH A LOT OF COUNTRY SIDE WITH MAGNIFICENT VIEWS. WE SEE A LOT OF HORSE RANCHES AND CATTLE FARMS AND WILDLIFE ABOUNDS HERE. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL TO SEE THEM OUT IN THE OPEN. WE HAVE TWO WORLD CLASS ZOO'S, WITH A PARK INSIDE WHERE ONE CAN PICNIC. WE ALSO HAVE MANY MANY LAKES THAT ARE ABSOLUTE BEAUTY. WE HAVE SEVERAL THEME PARKS AND ARE AT THIS VERY MOMENT BUILDING THE LARGEST MOVIE THEATRE IN THE WORLD RIGHT HERE IN MOORE WHERE I LIVE. IF ONE CAME TO OKLAHOMA I WOULD GREATLY ADVISE COMING TO SEE THE MEMORIAL THAT WE BUILT IN REMEMBRANCE OF OUR LOST CITIZENS OF THE BOMBING. HONEY IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND CALMING AND HUMBLING BEAUTIFUL REMINDER OF HOW PRECIOUS LIFE IS. ONE JUST HAS TO WALK INSIDE AND SEE FOR THEMSELVES WHAT IT TRULY IS. WE HAVE REVAMPED WHAT WAS A DREADFUL DOWNTOWN INTO A BUSTLING AWESOME AND JUMPING LIFE OF IT'S OWN. WE CALL IT BRICKTOWN. WHERE WE HAVE STATUES OF THE LAND RUN MADE OF BRONZE THAT SPAN A MILE LONG. THERE IS ALSO NOW A RIVERWALK AND CANAL RIDES (WHERE YOU CAN ALMOST TOUCH THE FAMILIES OF DUCKS THAT SWIM THERE)AS WELL AS TOP KNOTCH RESTAURANTS AND CLUBS. THERE IS THE CRYSTAL GARDENS AND OUR FORD CENTER WHERE WE HOLD ALL OUR LIVE EVENTS, CONCERTS AND GAMES. OUR DOWNTOWN LEAVES NOT MUCH TO BE DESIRED TO A VISITOR. WE HAVE A NEW HUGE BALL PARK INSIDE.DO YOU LIKE HORSE RACES? WE HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL RACE TRACK WITH WONDERFUL RESTAURANTS INSIDE, WITH CHILD FRIENDLY THINGS FOR THEM TO DO. WE ALSO HAVE MANY NEW AND VERY LARGE CASINOS THAT SPORT LIVE ENTERTAINMENT.NEED I SAY MORE? I CAN. AM I A PROUD OKIE OR WHAT? THE PEOPLE HERE ARE GOOD AND FRIENDLY AND ALWAYS WILLING TO GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS.OH, AND DID I MENTION THAT WE HAVE WALMART?grin
