That word was around with dandy in the olden days, 18th/19th Century or earlier maybe. Fellas with fancy frills on their shirt cuffs and the best of velvet trousers, mad for their style.

"Fop became a pejorative term for a foolish man overly concerned with his appearance and clothes in 17th century England. Some of the very many similar alternative terms are: "coxcomb", fribble, "popinjay" (meaning "parrot"), fashion-monger, and "ninny". "Macaroni" was another term, of the 18th century, more specifically concerned with fashion".

Now I have to look up prejorative! Please hold, and thank you for your patience.... ok, it means disparaging or belittling. I know you're gonna ask about coxcomb, fribble and popinjay. Never heard of them either.

Never heard of them? my goodness you have never read a good "rip bodice, press lips" regency romance - they are written and defined throughout them.

And later when the song - when the English called the Americans "macaroni" they turned it around in the song - Yankee Doodle Dandy"

Yankee Doodle went to town, a riding on a pony, stuck a feather in its hat and called it macaroni.
